I love Burne-Jones, but especially because when he learned that mummy brown--a well-used pigment at the time--was made from actual, pulverized mummies, he was so horrified that he immediately ran to his studio and gathered his stock of the stuff, which he then insisted on giving a Christian burial

I got a bit stranded with some flooding (all safe now!) but very ironically will not be able to complete the Odysseus prompt for Classicstober until I make my way properly home (or buy some pencils while I'm here) :p

weird medieval guys @weirdmedieval.bsky.social · 16/10/2023
the fact that i wrote a book about medieval art while mostly insanely sleep deprived and the editors at PENGUIN RANDOM HOUSE were like "yeah, looks great, send it to print" is absolutely mind boggling lmaooo
A page from the weird medieval guys book with a medieval illustration of a snake and the following text:

LATIN NAME: SERPENS
WHERE IT ABIDES: SNAKES,
UNFORTUNATELY, ARE ALL OVER

STRENGTHS: FEMININE WILES,

WEAKNESSES: NO ARMS IS PRETTY

Why should we care about eels? Well...in addition to being great fodder for memes, eels are also a super-important part of stream ecologies! How important? Historically, eels have made up as much as 50% of the total fish biomass in downstream reaches of US & European rivers. 🗃️🧪
Meme. Picture of an eel underwater. The picture is taken from the side, so you can only see one of the eel's blue-tinged eyes. But that eye is fixed on you like Sauron's eye on the One Ring (but in a more benevolent way). The eel has a kindly smile on its face, and you feel comfortable in its presence. It's the sort of look that makes you want to spill out your whole life story, including that one time in middle school. The eel won't judge you. It's seen worse, and it will take your secrets to its Sargasso grave. You couldn't ask for more.

Meme text reads:
"Half your streams
are belong to us."
