In which I tackle Robert Jordan's THE GREAT HUNT (1990), the second in the epically long epic fantasy series Wheel of Time. We've got anxiety about identity, questions about prophecy and fate, lots of trauma and emotional vulnerability, allusions to Arthuriana, and an explosive final battle.

Reading “The Great Hunt” by Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time 2)
Robert Jordan’s The Great Hunt (1990), the second Wheel of Time novel, follows as Rand runs from, confronts, and accepts his identity/fate as the Dragon Reborn.

My thoughts on multilinguality in SFF is always thus: if seasoned SFF readers can absorb conlang, complex structures and twisty plots without much exposition, why can't they absorb earth languages that might be foreign to them?

Please learn that "you don't apply the same rules to yourself as you do to others" isn't "exposing" conservatives, and definitely not an effective means of shaming them. They are very intentional and deliberate about this! It's an exercise of power, of deeming themselves exceptional and superior.

fascinating keynote by Zoha Kazemi at VICFA — I was really struck by her discussion of the importance of online communities and publishing platforms for the development of Iranian SFF: communities gathered online and that led to a rise in traditional publishing and offline activities.

"Enjoy the camps" is a succinct summation of the current moment trans people find ourselves in. People who insist they're allies also loudly proclaim they won't lift a finger to help us, will say nothing when we're attacked and even tacitly agree with the attacks, and still claim moral superiority.

Kenya has 16% (or is it 19%?) VAT on all books. Once you factor in import and clearing costs, a book that costs $20 in the U.S. is close to $35. Reading is expensive and we don’t have enough accessible libraries with diverse, recent—books published within the past 30 years—stock to fall back on.

to be honest I don't think you can blame the genocide of Indigenous people in settler colonies purely on the bourgeoisie. the nature of settler colonialism is that settlers of all classes materially benefit from the dispossession and elimination of Indigenous people, which makes land accessible.

from the bottom of my heart: there is no such thing as a "novella". there is a book (anything from a 5-page zine to a 1000-page doorstopper) and there is a story-published-in-a-book-or-periodical-with-other-stories. that's it. Binti? book. "Iseul's Lexicon"? story-published-with-other-stories.
