"what are YOU"
a view of the river Cam with a lot of swans dotted around, and a juvenile cormorant in the foreground. one of the swans (a juvenile) is peering at the cormorant in apparent confusion (probably because it just swam underneath them and popped out of nowhere). it looks like it is trying to figure out what this small creature is

Néide @seneolas.bsky.social · 04/04/2026
yes, eventually concluded it was probably a juvenile cormorant! i'd not seen a juvenile one before so the light feathers on its front (when it was standing on the bank) threw me off because i'm used to them being dark all over

earlier i was trying to work out if my wet beast was a cormorant or a shag so i tried googling "shag uk" and. well. that didn't go well so then i tried "shag birds uk" this was not an improvement.

update today in the cam i saw a juvenile great cormorant and lots and lots of little fishes so i think it can't be too poisonous

they are also a threat on the cam though i think not so much around jesus lock where they hold the cardboard boat race, they're more up around green dragon bridge and the equiano bridge so it's the normal rowers who have to dodge 'em

Néide @seneolas.bsky.social · 04/04/2026
honestly the biggest threat is whatever's living in the cam and like. it's not anything the regular rowers aren't braving every morning. though i guess they're somewhat less likely to end up fully submerged

Cambridge students' cardboard boat race sunk by insurers
The post-exam annual race has seen Cambridge University students take to the river in handmade boats.

cambridge has / used to have a cardboard boat race, where students make boats out of recycled materials and attempt to get from one bridge to another without sinking. some get quite elaborate. it got cancelled last year or the year before due to nobody being willing to insure it. can't imagine why

i've written fics where this is the case! i've read novels where this is the case! until the last year or two, reading the worst takes on POV known to man (average online books discourse every other week), it never occurred to me that people were self-inserting into everything at all

*sometimes!
010
Néide @seneolas.bsky.social · 03/04/2026
even 2nd person doesn't have to be self-insert! it CAN be, but it isn't automatically!! (speaking as someone who has written several fics in 2nd person that absolutely WEREN'T intended to be the reader insert) do these people also self-insert when their colleagues tell anecdotes about their weekend

i haven't; i'll check it out but am def much more looking for ireland at the moment (and indeed there wasn't really irish-language printing in ireland until the 19th century so it would've had minimal impact on the people i'm most interested in reading about currently!)

me, wilfully misunderstanding the term 'twelfth century renaissance': the twelfth century can be early modern if we try hard and believe in ourselves

Néide @seneolas.bsky.social · 02/04/2026
i'm not sure it's available at all at the moment -- looks like it might be out of print :')

oh hey, 99p kobo re-release, we love to see it

honestly just knowing this is probably a factor is helpful for avoiding self-blame + feeling some hope. i'm already something trying to manage hormones + get fluctuations under control for other chronic illness reasons so hopeful that if i succeed it will also make other things less of a battle.

oh i already had the loathing lol but yeah 🫠 i've been hanging in there but my work life has just kind of gone to shit despite other aspects of my life being more stable and no obvious reason for the decline, so the possible explanation alone is helpful. like ah! this was not my fault actually!

haha so many things are but i do love me a bit of 30s fiction! although dunno how easy it'll be to track down

Néide @seneolas.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
it was soooooooo nice to be able to read it in ebook. i raced through it in two days, normally takes me weeks to get through an irish book bc print is really hard for me

Néide @seneolas.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
as well as being an ebook reader for disability reasons, i don't live in ireland and therefore postage on irish print books ends up doubling the cost of every book, which is sad. every time i find an irish book on kobo it makes me very happy. i read madame lazare recently!

Néide @seneolas.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
i know that @leabharbreac.bsky.social has a number of books in irish set in this period which is GREAT except that none of them are available on kobo so it's hard for me to actually read them 🫠🫠 one or two are available on kindle only, others only in print. would love wider irish ebook distrib!

🫠 yeah i'm already in the "no research, trial and error only!" zone for hormones with my migraines and hypermobility being badly affected by it and now this as well. hahhah well. several things have just made sense about why i suddenly stopped coping. maybe they'll improve now i'm off progestogen...

hi what i've just been down a rabbithole about this and i'm suddenly realising why my life fell apart the past year or two (not menopausal -- transitioning then had to stop due to hormonal chronic illness stuff, had to switch birth control, have just switched again) (undiagnosed adhd, age 30)

that's all very well but doesn't help me in this specific context! (i'm both trying to supplement my own historical research with fictionalised accounts AND interested in researching how certain periods & events are depicted in fiction from different decades/in different genres)

Néide @seneolas.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
are there any novels out there about early modern bardic poets and if not. why not
210
Néide @seneolas.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
- does not have to be recently published, my reading for the two months has been dorothy dunnett, rosemary sutcliff, winston graham, and patrick o'brian. in fact possibly older is good. give me all the 1970s historical fiction frankly (as long as it's not shit)

further details: - the whole kind of 14th-18th century interests me but especially interested in 15th-17th century - ideally such novels would be focused on gaelic ireland in this period rather than the anglo-irish - UK availability a must, ebook availability strongly preferred

Néide @seneolas.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
both too late for what i'm looking for! the pull of the stars is 20th century and the wonder later 19th by the looks of things? so not early modern. i'm looking for kinda 14th-18th century, but especially 15th-17th (and ideally focused on gaelic ireland not anglo-irish in that period).
110
Néide @seneolas.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
i've been reading a whole load of dorothy dunnett etc lately -- she touches on ireland very occasionally but is primarily focused on the continent -- would love some books in a similar period that do focus on ireland (not necessarily exclusively)!
110
Néide @seneolas.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
googling this just gets you a lot of really twee lists about books set in ireland aimed at people going there on holiday for the first time, and most historical fiction lists are either early medieval or 19th-20th century, the whole period in between seems to be a bit of a blank

Néide @seneolas.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
asking for me but also for a friend. does anyone know any novels set in early modern ireland? (or late medieval ireland?) realised the only ones i've read in this period are the An Litir trilogy but i'm sure there must be some out there in english as well if i could only find them!

just one of those things alone would have been manageable but getting all three at once is going to hit suuuuuuper hard. next jan/feb is going to be financially Miserable. at least i know in advance and can start saving up for it i guess :')

in hindsight it was a very savvy decision to go on a fixed term energy thing for the next year but. i have a horrible feeling this means that due to life changes due early next year i'm gonna suddenly have a 75% lower income, drastically higher energy bills, and higher council tax all at once.

i'm mostly noticing the truly fascinating carpeting choices. at first i thought they were samples and maybe they're trying to pick a colour but then it was in too many rooms

the bad news is that my washing machine broke and the good news is that i fixed it and now i feel very grown-up and competent and accomplished even though there's water all over the floor the culprit: the drawstring of my swimming trunks tore off and got stuck in the filter :|

i knew going into this specific book that it would be focused more on the anglo-irish side but i didn't really expect the situation to be this dire. especially when talking about pseudohistorical constructs and somehow not mentioning lebor gabala lmao what

"oh look at all this terrible colonialism," they say. "much colonial, very violence, wow." and yet also: "gaelic sources? never heard of them. sure why would the irish talk about themselves"
110
Néide @seneolas.bsky.social · 08/01/2026
it makes me so mad when books about early modern irish history don't quote or cite a single irish-language source at any point or even mention that irish-language analogues for some of the english things they're talking about exist. especially when they're pretending to care about the irish

although not all quakers are christians! you can be a quaker and be an atheist, or it can be a way of expressing another faith (i know polytheist quakers, buddhist quakers, and a couple of jewish quakers). irish quakers tend to be more christian than british ones tho i've found
