Any decisions around the presence or absence of unit tests, integration tests, metrics dashboards, CI/CD or code review should be viewed through the lens or “is what I am doing creating a stronger or weaker contract between me and my team and my users?”

If you can't adopt there are lots of other things you can do to help. Foster, volunteer, fundraise, do a supply drive, sign up for your local shelter's newsletter to find out other ways to help. Remember that volunteering doesn't necessarily mean physical labor - shelters need all kinds of skills!

What Is Pacing?
Because there are currently no treatments that address the underlying cause of ME/CFS, it is
important for people with the illness to avoid symptom exacerbation, known as Post-Exertional
Malaise (PEM), as much as possible. To do this, they must learn to carefully manage their
limited energy. This strategy is known as pacing.
Pacing means adapting physical, cognitive, and emotional activities, as well as time spent
sitting or standing upright, to an individual's available and often fluctuating level of exertion
tolerance. This can mean having to choose between two completely ordinary activities
because doing both might already trigger a crash.
The more severe the illness, the smaller this margin can become (Bateman et al., 2021;
Hoffmann et al., 2024; NICE, 2021; Seton et al., 2024).
As a result, pacing can look very different from one person to another. For some, it means
reducing work, household responsibilities, or social activities and planning regular rest periods.
For people who are more severely affected, it may involve limiting even basic activities such
as washing, eating, or having short conversations to avoid deterioration. In addition, exertion
limits can fluctuate and are not always predictable. What was manageable on one day may
already be too much on another. Pacing therefore requires continuous adjustment to a person's
current condition.
This is why pacing is both necessary and challenging: it requires people to continually limit or
give up activities despite having the motivation and desire to engage in them.
Pacing is neither exercise training nor a treatment for the underlying disease. Its purpose is
simply to minimize PEM and reduce the risk of further deterioration (Hoffmann et al., 2024).

The viewpoints of people with disabilities and chronic illness in medicine and medical training would GREATLY improve our experiences. But the structure and the system is so harsh to people who need accommodations. Many won't make it through.

There is this thing called time toxicity that people with disabilities have to deal with. Very often, even the most basic tasks take longer than they do for others. It can be very frustrating. Asking over and over again for the same or more paperwork intentionally creates barriers.

Equally good day to remind people that there is such a thing as dynamic disability. This means that, if you saw someone coping one day or being able to walk a bit, doesn't mean that these abilities will be there in a couple of hours or next day. A good day to remind people that there is such thing as invisible disability. You might be looking just fine from the outside, yet you might have a flurry of impairments or vulnerabilities that need support and accommodations. People with invisible disability are less likely to be believed.

We really need to reframe how we talk about cats, especially from a care perspective in the veterinary & rescue world. Behaviors that people tend to label a cat “mean” for displaying come from fear, stress, or instinct. When we have empathy for cats & remove our human feelings, we do better by them.

Take frequent breaks to stretch and walk away for 30min or more at a time, be mindful of posture, don’t hunch over the table or death grip your tools, keep them as light in the hand as possible. Repetitive strain injury, nerve damage & arthritis will destroy you (things I wish someone had told me).

Don't introduce streaming until batch genuinely can't solve your problem. The operational complexity is significantly higher. When you do need it: Flink for complex processing, Kafka for the backbone.
