9) I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning. Conflicting thoughts, same as when I read the book—which I acc liked less but think you probably need to read to get the full impact. Quite old school Marxist & does that well but there are voids. Clio Barnard still best director for class in 21st c. Britain.

8) Fatherland. Not enough space to even begin to set out what a masterpiece this is: my film of the festival. Cried in the festival hall loos, cried for much of the cycle home; beautiful, understated & compelling depiction of how culture and its ‘great men’ can’t rise above the burden of history.

7) Rose. Saw this 2 days ago but haven’t been able to summon the energy to post because it left me cold, but everyone else I know who’s seen it seemed to have enjoyed it so I was racked w shame. Too dour. As a miserable film lover I was left wondering if my festival picks have been *too* miserable

Also, I think this could mix very dangerously with the new presumption against short (>1yr) prison sentences, where there’ll now surely be a risk of massive uptariffing? Maybe I’m wrong and the sentencing guidelines will prevent this but I don’t have much hope for coherency

Anyone who’s sat in the mags for a matter of hours will be able to tell you how ill-equipped they are for this. The range in quality & aptitude is pretty stark; you do get some excellent & well-versed people on the bench but many many more who are at best overreliant on clerks & at worst ignorant…

Really important thread — in principle, the magistracy is a crucial part of a democratic & accountable justice system. BUT magistrates are laypeople (hardly a representative group of laypeople at that). Giving them the powers to sentence people to up to two years in prison will be a disaster.

In turn I’d say it’s also not v easy to make a case for Bristol as a (formerly) loyal Labour city either. As I set out for @renewaljournal.bsky.social, Bristolian politics characterised by frequent swings & marginal wins which make delivery difficult for incumbents. Need longer to see how Greens do.

Catching up on this from current LRB. Compelling take that the origins of Bristol’s Green leanings come from its port/uni town identity but I think it overstates depth & breadth of Green support. Bristol best understood as a city of marginal politics more than anything. www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

6) Ink. AI Krays & AI Thatcher. Was it worth it for c. 6 seconds of totally incidental footage, Danny Boyle? Won’t take the time to say anything else about this film as the effort wouldn’t be mutual — the irony of doing this in a film about the corrosive impact of tabloids isn’t lost on me.

5) La Bola Negra. Much to think about! The 3 narratives intertwine much more seamlessly than is often the case, which makes the heavier-handed aspects forgivable. Don’t know why Glenn Close is in this—jarring scene. It’s moving but I’m not sure biopics w/ heavy fictionalisation are for me.

Failure to fit tags left 5,000 offenders unmonitored in England and Wales, report finds
In first half of this year 1,600 tags also had no signal for over two weeks, highlighting scale of probation crisis More than 5,000 offenders went unmonitored in the first half of the year because probation staff failed to install electronic tags, while 1,600 tags had no signal for more than two weeks due to faults, a report has found. The Institute for Government (IfG) has revealed the full scale of the crisis in the probation system in England and Wales, concluding that “rationing probation supervision” due to a lack of staff meant sentences imposed by the court had become “essentially a fiction” for most offenders. "Christian nationalism" in the UK is essentially a post-religious identity. Unlike the evangelical right in the US, it has no theological content, does not require belief in God & demands no moral or religious commitment. It reduces Christianity to a cultural "heritage" to be "defended" from Islam

Public executions were not abolished out of tenderness towards the criminal. They were abolished because of the effect on the people watching, and the dangers of making human death a source of commercial entertainment. Here's Charles Dickens in The Times, after witnessing an execution in 1849.
"I have seen, habitually, some of the worst sources of general contamination and corruption in this country, and I think there are not many phases of London life that could surprise me. I am solemnly convinced that nothing that ingenuity could devise to be done in this city, in the same compass of time, could work such ruin as one public execution, and I stand astounded and appalled by the wickedness it exhibits. I do not believe that any community can prosper where such a scene of horror and demoralization as was enacted this morning outside Horsemonger Lane Gaol is presented at the very doors of good citizens, and is passed by, unknown or forgotten. And when in our prayers and thanksgivings for the season we are humbly expressing before God our desire to remove the moral evils of the land, I would ask your readers to consider whether it is not a time to think of this one, and to root it out.

I am, Sir, your faithful Servant.
Charles Dickens".

4) Queer Edward II. LOVED this. Edward II is mb my film of the year (rest of LFF pending); “behind the scenes” docs are a mixed bag but this was so well executed. Great cinematography given this was a guy running around behind the scenes, packed a punch in its own right without being didactic/stern

3) A Man of his Time/Notre Salut. What would the most venal middle manager you know have been up to in Vichy France? Good study of the banality of evil—heavy on the anachronisms (am sure that management consultant jargon wasn’t this developed by the 1940s) but yes the parallels with today do land

Yes!! Same here — I guess that’s partially the problem of a biopic but I can’t say there was much that I wasn’t already expecting or steeling myself for. I guess he’s got to make ends meet though I see what you mean, they’re never bad films per se but not necessarily super exciting either

1) Elsinore. It’s solid, he’ll get a gong or two for it, but i do resent films where making the audience cry subs in for emotional depth. That being said, it was funnier and sparkier than I expected and I’d say particular props to Olivia Colman who’s playing a different character for a change
