Remember how we passed bills that would bar ICE agents from state and local employment as well as ban California law enforcement from doing side jobs for ICE, but then @gavinnewsom.bsky.social vetoed both bills because he's stupid and has terrible political instincts?

Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoes bill to bar former ICE officers from California jobs

It does not downplay one form of lynching to identify another form. It is helpful to remember that many categories include multiple types.

“Lynching” in the US is not a singular phenomenon. The lynching you are describing is a “racial terror” lynching. There were “public spectacle lynchings,” which have elements of the former but are not identical. There are also “legal lynchings” which were the summary use of capital punishment.

Cruickshank is key, b/c it basically blessed political violence (and really just violence period) against Black Americans, but there's three CJs in a row (Waite, Fuller, and White) that twist the Reconstruction Amendments beyond recognition to enshrine discrimination into the law.

I've been immersed in research on Reconstruction in Lousiana and it's a very difficult truth to absorb that the white terrorist movement in the South was among the most successful terrorist movements in global history. Took 10 years but it won a total & complete victory through murder and atrocity.

Iran sometimes does public executions but I can't find evidence they've ever televised one. It seems like North Korea, China, and Saudi Arabia have also never televised or livestreamed any executions. Looks like the U.S. will be in a club of one if Pete Hegseth goes through with this.

And so, in the context of financial capitalism and its profit pressures, it can seem to men like this that their time is better spent building a device to replace the care work that women are asking of them, than committing long term to doing more of that work themselves.

Over time, women have demanded that men both step up to do more of the caregiving and step aside to make room for women in "profitable" jobs. But what hasn't changed is the underlying incentive structure of financial capitalism and its devaluation of "unprofitable" labor like care.

So, historically, men have used the privilege afforded to them by patriarchy to push the "unprofitable" work of care onto women, making it easier for them to hoard the more profitable (and thus higher-status) work for themselves. And companies encouraged this, because it meant more profits for them.

Under financial capitalism, profit is the prime directive. But care is too labor-intensive to be profitable at the level of compensation needed for sustainability. And it can't be easily automated at the level of quality required for human needs.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

Basically AI allows software engineers to produce shitty code *faster* and in higher volumes which increases the amount time spent on code reviews and revisions nullifying the productivity gained from producing the code in the first place.
