If anything, an explicitly non-alphanumeric stamp is a better choice for specifying a year with one symbol, since it can be unambiguous. It's not as fancy as an animal silhouette & nobody seems to have found a match, but it could do the same thing. 120

YET :) The "stamp holder" suggestion was because a love-letter pendant was a cute way to carry stamps, so you were always able to write to your love. Victorian WhatsApp, I guess. And it's the same in every place that it's stamped, so it's really unlikely that it was a "5" that someone stamped at a bad angle. It's a fascinating puzzle, whatever the answer! 130

A "3" can refer to the grade of silver (third grade is typically something like 75% or 80% purity, depending on location/year) The "5" just doesn't look like a 5. The stamp *could* be damaged, but it looks more like a backwards "c" with a dot or 2 on top. 220
