Good news! Privately owned utilities paying out shareholder dividends at the expense of investment and higher bills can't possibly be considered "serving the public interest", so I guess we can look forward to renationalisation soon.

The Sheeran debacle has once again made me appreciate how BBC News will both-sides everything from climate change to racism, but never give a voice to those *opposing* genocide.

There are no 'legitimate concerns' about climate change, no 'legitimate concerns' about genocide in Gaza, and no 'legitimate concerns' about racist thugs attacking RNLI volunteers. The only concerns it's legitimate to hold are about the existence of asylum seekers. Britain in 2026.

Ed Sheeran was making cynically, offensively bland AI-style music before AI was a thing. Why it should surprise anyone that he's an unprincipled corporate stooge is beyond me.

The UK government ceasing automatically to support almost anything the government of Israel does is a major shift. The next step should be to rescind the ban on #PalestineAction, to stop treating protesters as terrorists, and to acknowledge that those seeking to disrupt a genocide may have a point.

I think Reform are underestimating the extent to which most people find them repugnant, based on the minority it would take to put them in power. But then understanding constitutional arrangements is one of their many, many weak points.

We have had this conversation so many times. You do not have to platform/debate obscene views that are also false. I wrote during a wave of pressure on progressives to compromise with far-right haters:
I can comprehend, and do, that lots of people don’t believe climate change is real, but is there some great benefit in me listening, again, to those who refuse to listen to the global community of scientists and see the evidence before our eyes? A lot of why the right doesn’t “understand” climate change is that climate change tells us everything is connected, everything we do has far-reaching repercussions, and we’re responsible for the whole, a message at odds with their idealization of a version of freedom that smells a lot like disconnection and irresponsibility. But also climate denial is the result of fossil fuel companies and the politicians they bought spreading propaganda and lies for profit, and I understand that better than the people who believe it. If half of us believe the earth is flat, we do not make peace by settling on it being halfway between round and flat.

Oil and gas giants brazenly profiteer with total impunity while worsening climate catastrophe. It'd be more surprising if they didn't take advantage of war in the Middle East. Beyond time these corporations were dismantled, and held criminally accountable for their wilfully destructive actions.

The UK needs to reduce its car dependency for a host of climate, environmental, and health reasons, but this week has clearly shown that the sheer volume of concrete infrastructure needed to store and move cars is devastating during extreme heat events. Cities need more trees and fewer roads.
