Thank you to anyone who’s replied, liked or just seen this message since last Friday night and had my Dad in their thoughts. He’s in ITU and receiving round the clock treatment for very serious conditions, and it does help knowing the sheer amount of thoughts and prayers out there for him.

I’m so sorry about this, Matthew. I think it’s a truly terrible decision and an extraordinary one after all the work you and your colleagues and teams have put into this superb programme.

You’re probably right there. The decline in advertising revenue wouldn’t have helped - I think it was Morse where those Sponsored by Guinness Stout style straplines began.

Morse had a big effect (like on the final Van der Valk season, though that was always proper grown up drama incl under Euston). But Hill Street overlapped with that, LA Law, St Elsewhere, etc, and then NYPD Blue, Murder One. There was a decade or so of primetime good stuff before The Sopranos era.

Attenborough bought in The High Chaparral for BBC2 in the late 60s on quality grounds, rightly. The Rockford Files, MASH, The MTM Show, Rhoda, Taxi etc were all brilliant high quality shows, Kojak, early Starsky and Hutch, The Outer Limits, Star Trek even. Roots, Washington BCD…

I think you’re being perfectly fair, Justin. This is someone with power and responsibility demonstrating an astonishing lack of knowledge, professionalism and tact, or indeed understanding of the issues or their reality.

I’m tough on this great for reasons, some personal, and some because it’s a little over praised imho. When it was apparently adopted as a tonal template I sensed trouble. And I agree with TD’s own assessment that it “shows signs of haste.” But there are loads of terrific scenes, including this one.

One of the reasons I've largely given up on music/spoken word combinations is that actors often don't like them - they feel the music interferes with or inhibits their performance. But some years ago at Bath Festival Stephanie Cole brilliantly read extracts from my novel The Rain Before It Falls ...

Way too early. At this point they're only looking to hear from production companies to determine which can bring the most resources, money and other elements to the table. They won't even be talking about writers for a while yet.

This made me smile, attached to an ordinary cast iron drainpipe on a house in Durham. #TinyJoys
A cast iron drain pipe going down the side of a white-painted house. A crest of red feathers and a bright orange beak made from something solid have been attached around it. It looks remarkably like "Feathers McGraw", the evil criminal penguin from The Wrong Trousers.

It's not just menhirs that enjoy continuing veneration. Many glacial erratics are on the routes of modern lithic pilgrims and assorted stone botherers. The deposited rocks serve to anchor folklore whether it's tales of Old Clip's anvil or boulders thrown by giants. – Dr. M. Benn

When you’re chronically ill, you can do everything “right” and still experience setbacks. You can “try harder” and still decline. You can do all the wellness cures, doctor’s appointments and hoop jumping and still suffer. That’s the reality of being disabled.

The artwork "Cold" by Remedios Varo depicts a spectral figure riding an ethereal crystal through a dark sky, scattering what appear to be snowflakes over a barren, wintry village. Varo, known for her dreamlike and surreal paintings, often infused her work with mystical and ethereal elements, capturing the enchantment of the unconscious mind.

No one’s apparently learnt anything from the dark, gritty reboots of Outta Space! or Robert’s Robots, or Frank Spencer For Hire and the spin-off You Could Be Betty. And Noah’s Back! picked up her adventures years later, wasn’t a reboot and changed Tuesday night television. Not a bleedin’ mention.
