Okay so I've built a new Atlas, this time it lets you explore the conversations on Bluesky over the past 7 days graphically. It should update every ~6 hours and help you navigate the information environment that exists on here. I've learned a LOT about what people do here today... atlas.jazco.dev

The income cap needs to be set at a level that helps individuals and couples whose income currently denies them the chance to buy a new home. Last time the lack of a cap distorted the new build development market, as many new builds were focussed on those who could already afford to buy a home.

Arguably the greatest song to be recorded 4 times by 3 iterations of a band under 3 different names and in 2 languages, and then remixed once before it reached number 2 (eventually scoring a number 1 when it was covered by my mate's little brother's band a decade and a half later)

"The trouble with you, Spode, is that just because you have succeeded in inducing a handful of half-wits to disfigure the London scene by going about in black shorts, you think you're someone. You hear them shouting 'Heil, Spode!' and you imagine it is the Voice of the People. That is where you make your bloomer. 90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

One thing about speeding that many drivers refuse to accept: In urban and suburban environments, speeding doesn't even get you somewhere significantly faster. You are just getting to your next red light or highway choke point faster. You are endangering other people for almost no upside.

This is good from the Government's new National Planning Policy Framework: "Development proposals should protect and enhance the network of public rights of way". The previous version spoke mainly about "maintaining" them. Ramblers and assorted wanderers will be pleased.
TR8: Public rights of way
1. Development proposals should:
a. Protect and enhance the network of public rights of way, including through suitable
diversions agreed with the highway authority; and
b. Take opportunities to extend, link or improve the quality of existing routes where this
enables one or more of the following:
i. Improved access to green spaces and the countryside;
ii. New direct and circular routes and connections between local and long-distance
footpaths, bridleways and cycle routes;
47 Including new technologies, for example droneports, vertiports and other autonomous vehicle facilities.
73
iii. The provision of accessible, safe and convenient links to services and facilities;
and
iv. Improved connections with public transport stops and interchanges.

Bring back the use of "perpendicular drinking". “Vertical drinking” in the night-time economy: alcohol licencing and proxies for “uncivilised” drinking bodies www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
ABSTRACT
‘Vertical drinking’ is a longstanding concept in alcohol licencing decision-making and the literature on night-time leisure. As the term implies, it concerns drinking alcohol standing up. The proposition is simple: establishments where people stand to drink are associated with less desirable clientele, more drunkenness and a greater likelihood of crime and disorder. Existing research has explored how the concept of ‘Vertical drinking’ – known historically as ‘perpendicular drinking’ – can form part of heavily classed distinctions between ‘civilised’ and ‘uncivilised’ drinking practices. By examining 40 licencing hearings in England under the Licencing Act 2003, this paper demonstrates how vertical drinking serves as a: (i) proxy for ‘uncivilised’ drinking establishments, (ii) a proxy for problematic (working class) drinking bodies, and (iii) how the legal tool of the licence targets problematic drinkers by shaping the establishment in which they drink. Assumptions about problematic drinking bodies – this ‘vertical drinker’ – inform the regulatory distinction between ‘civilised’ and ‘uncivilised’ establishments.Taylor and Francis online article.

Local journalism is only part of the puzzle. Strong leader models, whether at local level or regional level are not transparent nor effectively scrunised. The power imbalance between elected mayors/strong leaders is such that those whose role is to scrutinised them are essentially powerless.

@privateeyenews.bsky.social Dee Nial Column is almost believable in its skewering of Badenoch's new purity test on Net Zero for prospective candidates.
Ex-Conservative MP writes for the Eye

HI! In the light of Kemi Badenoch's announcement that she's going to undergo a purge of prospective conservative candidates who believe in Net n Zero, I would like to make the following statement:

Yes I do get rung up three times a day by solar panel manufacturers, but then again, doesn't everybody? I can only assume I foolishly filled in a questionnaire at the Chelsea Flower Show and my contact details got data-farmed by Palantir and sold to "Eco-Friendly Solutions Ltd"!

I also confess that I do indeed have a "bag for life" in the cupboard under the stairs, but can I stress that it's not my life! My ex-husband brought it home one day and asked if he could keep it and, like a fool, I relented! I have now taken the bag to a landfill, where hopefully it will hang around for the next thousand years!

I do accept that when our local Conservative chairman drove past my house he did notice that there are a number of bins out front, one of which was coloured green.

Can I just reiterate what I said in the phone call I had with him where the cleaner puts the rubbish is her business, and I have never knowingly folded cardboard, washed out jars or inspected packaging to see if it can be recycled at home or given to the Ocado man for recycling at large supermarkets!

And lastly, and strenuously, I did say "phew" on my Facebook page, with a sadface emoji and a blazing sun emoji. That "phew" did NOT imply that I believe in man-made global warming. It was a "phew" at the fact that my lawn was ruined and my sycamore had just died due to heat stress.

So that's it! The only man-made heat I'm wilting from is from the team at the Conservative Candidate Assessment Centre! Love you Guys

The Whitehaven star was called into the XI by Thomas Tuchel for the bronze play-off game, which went England's way with a remarkable 6-4 win.

It meant Henderson became Cumbria's first World Cup player for 36 years, the last being Barrow's Gary Stevens who played in the 1990 tournament.
