Who doesn't have fond memories of when grandpa took 'em out to the ol' fishing hole? It wasn't til years later that you learned fishing holes were supposed to have water in 'em, or that you weren't supposed to toss a burning effigy into the fishing hole while reciting the ancient verses.
A closeup view of seven hexes on the map, at the center of which is a ring of standing stones surrounding a hole in the ground. Perhaps a bottomless pit? The surrounding hexes are mostly open plains, save for the river and road in the northwest corner.

Behold, my single favorite point-of-interest on the whole map.
A closeup view of seven hexes on the map, at the center of which is a giant blue-grey walrus resting on a rock a little ways off from the coastline. The surrounding hexes are mostly water, with a small peninsula stretching out towards the walrus from the east.

The faction I'll be playing are certified swampfolk, living in ramshackle settlements built on the more sturdy bones of ancient ruins. They pay us in woims!
A closeup view of seven hexes on the map, at the center of which is a city of wooden buildings raised up on sticks, or built atop ancient stone ruins. The rooftops are covered in green moss. In the surrounding hexes, we have a coastline to the north, and swamplands to the south. A couple of rune-etched standing stones rise out of the swamp.

When I think about this chained up mountain, I get that same sick feeling I got at the part of Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland, when the titular Nemo opens the big scary door he's not supposed to. I had to leave the room at that part. Don't do it!
Closeup view of seven hexes on the map, at the center of which is a towering mountain wrapped in giant chains, sealed with a padlock. THe surrounding hexes are mostly mountains, but to the southeast a road runs through the lowland valley.

Sorta. Cataphract is a play-by-post roleplaying wargame, often with 10+ players, played over multiple months. Though this map is a little atypical of a Cataphract map. This blog tells more - samsorensen.blot.im/cataphracts-...

Well, to be honest I started off a little more restrained, mostly doing stuff like ruins, or spooky towers, or monster's lairs, etc — and then one day the person I was making the map for suggested "What if there's a giant bird just off the coast?" and I realized I could just go wild with whimsy.

I'll actually just be a player in this one, but, yes, I am in for a treat! While I got to draw all of the weird stuff on this, I have no idea how it's going to be interpreted in-game.

I'm super jealous of the players who get to be the faction whose towns are all carried on the backs of giant elephants.

Big volcano on an island in the middle of the bay! Everything I know about games tells me there's something useful inside.
Closeup of seven hexes on the map, at the center of which is a volcanic mountain. Brightly-colored lava flows from the volcano's mouth, smoke rising out overhead. The surrounding hexes are made up of a variety of smaller islands, some with smaller mountains on them.

Collect the giant pearl from the mouth of the giant clam to socket it into your armor for +3 Water Resistance. What do you mean that's not how this game works? Oh, and don't forget to check behind the waterfall.
Closeup view of seven hexes on the map, at the center of which is a lake, with a giant clam on an island in the middle, its mouth open to display a pearl. A waterfall feeds into the lake from the northwest, while a river flows away from the lake to the southeast. A city sits on the cliff to the north. Forests flank the lake on the east and west.

I'm sure we needn't worry about this colossal demon skull – whatever it was is long dead, and probably can't hurt us anymore, right?
A closeup of seven hexes on the map, at the center of which is a swampy pool in which a half-submerged demonic skull can be seen. The hexes to the north are mountainous, while the hexes to the south are a swampy mess.

Some people live in subterranean mountain cities, surrounded by mushroom forests! It was a lot of fun figuring out how to represent a subterranean city on the map.

Real long dragon wrapped around a mountaintop! A very spiky mountain. Is it guarding some treasure? Or just chilling?

A castle upon a mountaintop? You have to ride the lift to get up there? Neat! But probably lonely up there, right?

This big purple vulture may hold great wisdom. Might also be hungry. But if you're not carrion yet, you're probably safe. Maybe it can teach you some bird magic. Or bird lore. Or bird music.

A snake? A worm? A wurm? It's very large. It's dead, probably.
A close-up view of seven hexes on the map, at the center of which is a large orange/red snakelike creature. Its eyes are X'd out, clearly indicating that it's probably dead, right? It's nestled among some hill country. The hills continue to the southwest. To the southeast are mountains.

Colossal fertility statue, just one of many. Is she carrying a colossal dish of grapes? Weary travelers should try to scale the towering statue to find out!
A closeup of seven hexes, at the center of which is a towering fertility statue – a voluptuous woman holding aloft a dish full of something purple. Could be grapes. The rest of the terrain is mostly flat plains, but there is some bits of forest in the corners of the screenshot. A river runs from northeast to southwest, with a road alongside its south bank.

And check out these hippos in the swamp! I'm sure they're friendly. Also don't worry about the smoldering ruins of nearby towns. The hippos are innocent.
A closeup of seven hexes on the map, at the center of which are two hippos. To the northwest and southeast are ruined towns, still smoldering. Much of the terrain is murky swampland, with a series of broken walkways through one swampy hex.

A fullly-illustrated hex-map for a #Cataphract game. I was given free rein to add all sorts of weird points-of-interest throughout the map, so we've got all sorts of weird ruins, caves, giant birds, monster habitats, colossal fertility statues, and oversized vegetables.
An illustrated map of a fantasy land, designed as a "hex-crawl" map. It features a wide variety of detailed locations. The only label on the map is in the bottom right corner, reading "Zwijger."

I just had the weird realization that choosing not to use AI feels a lot like choosing to use a computer rather than your phone for pretty much anything, only ramped up in intensity. You'll be constantly bombarded by people who can't understand why you'd do it, and tools assuming phones are the norm
