Herb Trimpe covered Godzilla 1 (1977), and splashed it with Frank Giacoia (under a Doug Moench script) - original art, no less!

Today's four random pieces of palaeoart: Margaret Colbert's Brontosaurus, Peter Snowball's Deinonychus, @joschuaknuppe.bsky.social's Spicomellus, and Maurice Wilson's Saltoposuchus!
A heavily built, tail-dragging Brontosaurus stands in a stooped posture, pelted by a heavy downpour and powerful wind. Ferns form a blanket over the ground beneath, and a single windblown tree sits beside it.A scaly, reddish-brown Deinonychus leaps through the air with its right leg curled up in preparation to kick out with its sickle claw. A blue-grey Spicomellus covered in light-toned spines stands in a beam of light, backed by a wall of ambiguous darkness. Extremely long, slightly recurved spines decorate its nape and shoulder, matched by long trailing spines at the base of the tail. A striding, bipedal Saltoposuchus shown with theropod-like proportions. Its fat-padded tail sticks out behind it, counterbalancing the slightly upright-oriented body. Its short, stumpy arms end in tiny hooked claws, held out in front of it.

Fellas, You guys know consent can be withdrawn at any time, right? I’m not even saying your arguments actually have any merit. I *am* saying that even if they did, you’re still throwing out the most dipshit ideas available and telling on yourself, to boot.

DINOTOBER, day 2. (Unfinished sketch) This isn’t my best work. It’s not even really good. If you called it bad, I wouldn’t be offended. Really. But it was a relaxing sketch with one goal—capture the calm I get when I see pastoral dinosaur scenes elsewhere. And this sketch makes me feel that calm.

Dinotober every day this month unless (until) I forget. Generic sauropod, probably a goofy Apatasaurus. New work *will* come periodically through the month.
A pen and ink drawing of a sauropod’s head and upper neck.

There seems to be a lot of gnashing of teeth on the BlueSky this morning (I mean, more than normal), so I would like to remind everyone that optimism and kindness and joy are *not* entirely incompatible with this shitshow of a timeline. They are, and I can’t express the enough, essential.

As the weather starts to turn, I actually can't think of a much better book to snuggle up and read - this fantasy novel is standalone (although you can then pick up the Cemeteries of Amalo trilogy, which is also brill), incredibly kind, has stunning world-building and prose, and is cheap today!

Let me start by saying I am barely a competent guitarist, learning the instrument in his 50s. But tonight I played better than I ever have for a solid hour, even getting the intro to “Ventura Highway” down a few times in a decent tempo. People: don’t stop learning. I feel almost young again.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

So when I was a teenager aspiring to write novels (forty years later, many novels begun, no full manuscripts, for disclosure) I read an article where a writer described bringing their characters in for imaginary interviews. Ever since, my characters sneak in and whisper in my ear.

When I was a sportswriter, I had to defend myself in public, in front of other writers and media folks, because a coach got pissy about a headline I wrote. I also wrote the story below the headline, and the headline was dead accurate, but somebody had a bee up their ass about the headline.

I was just going to sketch a bit while the kid and I watched an episode of Blue Eye Samurai. But now I’m going to have to give this a proper work-over, aren’t I?
A pencil draft of a pachyrhinosaurus wearing a saddle with a woman on its back. She has a pole axe and a ponytail. Darker lines attest to special attention being paid to the ceratopsian’s feet by the artist (me), who probably has a lot of trouble with feet, but goddammit, these aren’t horrible.

I am very happy to be of a particular age where I quite enjoy Hitchhiker *and* DCC. A notable wrinkle is the way the audio production of DCC is very much a delight all its own. Mileage varies, but I think DCC moves the needle on what audiobooks can be (regular narration is fine, too).
