A scene from The Odyssey where Penelope stands before the suitors, but Tim Robinson has been added in. It’s a reference to I Think You Should Leave. Penelope says “Ronnie, I feel like you’re just here for the zip line” and Tim Robinson says “what?”

Writing indie komiks from the PHL 🇵🇭, the biggest hurdle to reaching readers is ultimately distribution. Indeed, in the coming months, we plan to put this comic online, where anyone can read it for free. But it's no substitute for the printed page, which is why we're so proud of this edition! 3/

🖼️ Between Panels, my short comic with @bskynirenren.bsky.social, is now available at NIF! 🛒: nif-shop.cartoonist.coop/products/bet... It's a graphic essay about making comics in, on, and through history. 🌏 (It's also the closest I'll EVER get to writing about myself 🫣) Between Panels was… 1/4
A rough pencil sketch of a comic or graphic novel cover titled “Between Panels.” The hand-drawn lettering is arranged in large block letters, with the “A” in “PANELS” replaced by a padlock icon. Below the title are the credits “Written by Scott Lee Chua” and “Illustrated by Ren2x Galeno.” A sketched masked character in a cap appears in the lower left corner, pointing upward, while construction lines and layout guides remain visible throughout the unfinished design.A black and white comic depicts a pair of scissors cutting comic strips out of a newspaper. The narrator begins, "Five pesos used to buy you fifteen minutes. Fifteen whole minutes, mind you. But that was before the nuns heard about my librarial service... confiscated my scrapbook... gathered everyone in the covered courts and denounced Charles Schulz, Jim Davis, and Pol Medina Jr. as a bunch of pagans and satanists." In the next row there are four panels depicting the scrapbooking process. Comic panels are glued onto a graphing notebook. Next, another panel from a different comic is placed beside it. The following shows a glue stick tracing the edge of yet another comic, which is placed onto the grid paper. The narrator continues, “Which is to say, before business really took off.” A boy with glasses walks down a flight of stairs, clutching his notebook as he passes a nun. The narrator continues, "After that, I asked Kongkong (Grandfather) to subscribe to the Star, which had more English comics." A closeup of the boy’s notebook, comic strips peeking out of the top edge—the narrator continues, "He'd been a Bulletin man since the war, when they gave him his job as a newsboy." A girl in a school uniform counts coins in her outstretched palm. The narrator continues, “The next day, I bought four graphing notebooks with the last of my allowance.” The hallway of the school is full of children huddled over these notebooks all reading these collections of comics. “Kongkong subscribed to the Star.” The little boy with glasses counts the money he’s made.A Spanish galleon pulls into a port as the narrator says, “At the height of the Spanish empire, a strange galleon made landfall at Manila carrying nothing but cacao. The port officials marveled at its ornate carvings, its gleaming hull, its sails of finest Chinese silk.” A senior inspector in conquistador armor asks, “Point of origin?” as he fills out a form. A woman on the ship calls out, “Punta de Panamao… a small town hidden away on the southern coast of the isle of Panamao.” The inspector looks up, startled, and smitten by her beauty. In the next panel, a jar of New World Chocolates on a checkout counter is shown as the narrator describes that “As the cacao was rumored to have healing powers, it was soon all sold, and the galleon departed. A week later, the senior inspector abandoned his post and sailed to Panamao, which we know today as Biliran.” The young narrator and an old man, his grandfather, are at a shop buying the cacao powder as the narrator continues, “When he arrived, however, there was no shipyard… no galleon… and, of course, no girl.”A volcano emitting a plume of smoke towers over a field of sugarcane, with cacao trees in a separate panel, and rice plants in another panel, as the narrator describes the scene, “There was cacao, though. And rice. And sugarcane. Crops enough to make tsamporado in the shade of Mt. Biliran, a thousand meters high.” The volcano of Mt. Biliran is shown from above twice, with smoke coming out of it, and then with lava flowing down its sides. “In 1901, an American geological survey noted something concerning: That the volcano on the island was bigger than the records had led them to believe; that Biliran itself was a massive underwater volcano, and Mt. Biliran merely a vent; that if they had done the survey earlier, maybe they could have caught it.” A surgeon stitches up a colostomy incision with as he says, “One last. Deep breath…” The old man is lying on a hospital bed. The surgeon asks the nurse, asks, “Gauze, please. Thank you.” The narrator as a child is reading comics in the background.

Essentially, I think that LLM-generated dialogue only makes sense if you believe that the product of writing is words. But the product of writing isn't words, any more than the product of justice is prisoners, or the product of love is weddings. The product of writing is meaning.
