A Spanish galleon pulls into a port as the narrator says, “At the height of the Spanish empire, a strange galleon made landfall at Manila carrying nothing but cacao. The port officials marveled at its ornate carvings, its gleaming hull, its sails of finest Chinese silk.” A senior inspector in conquistador armor asks, “Point of origin?” as he fills out a form. A woman on the ship calls out, “Punta de Panamao… a small town hidden away on the southern coast of the isle of Panamao.” The inspector looks up, startled, and smitten by her beauty. In the next panel, a jar of New World Chocolates on a checkout counter is shown as the narrator describes that “As the cacao was rumored to have healing powers, it was soon all sold, and the galleon departed. A week later, the senior inspector abandoned his post and sailed to Panamao, which we know today as Biliran.” The young narrator and an old man, his grandfather, are at a shop buying the cacao powder as the narrator continues, “When he arrived, however, there was no shipyard… no galleon… and, of course, no girl.”

A volcano emitting a plume of smoke towers over a field of sugarcane, with cacao trees in a separate panel, and rice plants in another panel, as the narrator describes the scene, “There was cacao, though. And rice. And sugarcane. Crops enough to make tsamporado in the shade of Mt. Biliran, a thousand meters high.” The volcano of Mt. Biliran is shown from above twice, with smoke coming out of it, and then with lava flowing down its sides. “In 1901, an American geological survey noted something concerning: That the volcano on the island was bigger than the records had led them to believe; that Biliran itself was a massive underwater volcano, and Mt. Biliran merely a vent; that if they had done the survey earlier, maybe they could have caught it.” A surgeon stitches up a colostomy incision with as he says, “One last. Deep breath…” The old man is lying on a hospital bed. The surgeon asks the nurse, asks, “Gauze, please. Thank you.” The narrator as a child is reading comics in the background.
