After getting shot in the chest, Meg is on death’s door. Shortly before the end, she is saved with the help of a device which reverses the direction she travels through time, so that shooting her again heals her instead of harming her – a plan apparently orchestrated by her identical twin sister, Gem. Now, she must live the rest of her life in reverse, from the future to the past. All the while, she starts to form feelings for the married woman helping her adjust to this new life.

Gem sets a bag on the table in front of her and takes a few things out. Two of them I don’t quite recognise, but the third is a gun, which she inspects thoroughly before setting it down on the table. I did not know she had a gun. Where the hell did she get that?
The man who shot me seemed to think he recognised me, even though I’d never seen him in my life. He must’ve mistaken me for my sister. What did she do to piss him off?
The doctor looks at her, his eyes wide. Gem backs onto the bed where I am lying and takes a seat. She looks down and stares at something in astonishment, but I can’t tell what.
With a pained expression in his eyes, the doctor picks up the gun from the table.
I hear the muffled pow of a gunshot as he turns around and shoots Gem in the chest. She sits there in confusion for a moment or two, unmoving and bleeding out.
My vision is very blurry now, and I feel on the brink of death. I try to think through the brain fog.
If I’m going to die, then so be it, but I won’t just lie here while this psycho doctor shoots people. Adrenaline now coursing through my body, I rip out the tube attached to my arm. Gem slowly turns to lie face down on the bed right beside me. I reach for her, but my arm seems to pass right through her and I roll over onto my stomach.
For a moment I wonder if she vanished, but no, she’s just on the other side of me. I painfully push myself up and reposition myself to be sitting on the side of the bed. I stare as the pool of blood from where she was shot trickles upward towards me, towards the wound in my chest. What is going on?
The doctor sets something down that emits a dim glow, and points the gun at me. I hear a whap as something tugs me forward. I feel searing pain for a moment, and then nothing. The blood on my chest is gone and even my dress looks intact. How – ?

Station 14, an ERSSHO (Enormous Rotational Space Station in Heliocentric Orbit), and one of 126 making up the ALCEFS. In the background, the constellations of Orion and Taurus can be seen, as well as Venus, Earth and the Sun.

The cylindrical space station has one of its flat faces pointed at the Sun, which if shown, would be covered in solar panels. The opposite face, which is visible, has the space dock at its centre, surrounded by red text that reads 'ALCEFS' and 'Station 14', along with the anarcho-communist flag and the flag of the ALCEFS. A spaceship is currently taking off from the space dock, with a pair of glowing red heat radiators on either side. Around the rim of this face is the lookout area, a large window where residents can look out at the stars. There are more windows scattered around the curved face of the station, which would be transparent panels in the floor, again for residents to look out at the stars. Surrounding the station is the flywheel: two rings, one surrounding each circular face of the station, connected by beams (probably around five, although only two are shown). Life in the decentralised, fully automated, jobless space stations of the ALCEFS is idyllic. There are no barriers to housing, food or any other essentials; everyone just receives what they need for free, without having to prove they deserve it. And so Skylar is surprised when they meet a homeless woman. A woman who gave up her home in a coercive deal with a self-styled businessman. But that is not all; Skylar will soon uncover a threat from another angle: a delegate using every trick in the book to promote themself and accumulate proxy votes. As it turns out, even in the idyllic ALCEFS, a couple independent bad actors can still slip through the cracks.

“Hi Nelly. You like it out here in the gardens? Or just couldn’t get a place in the camping grounds?”
“The gardens are nice,” Nelly replied. “But yeah, the camping grounds were booked solid until tomorrow.”
“The camping trip really couldn’t wait, could it?”
Skylar meant it lightheartedly, but could see by Nelly’s reaction that they’d hit a nerve.
“No, it couldn’t, but –” Nelly started, frustrated. “It’s not a camping trip, okay? I just need somewhere to sleep.”
“You got kicked out of home?” Skylar asked. “Why not stay at the temporary shelter?”
After all, it’s there for people who need a place to stay while they apply for a new home.
“That’s where I was staying for the past two months,” Nelly replied. “That is, until I got into an argument with someone there and, well, we agreed to put some distance between us.”
“Two months?!” Skylar repeated, shocked. “It doesn’t take that long to get a home approved.”
A couple days, at most. Usually they have it done the same day.
“For a supplementary home loan?” Nellie remarked. “Apparently it does.”
“Supplementary?” Skylar asked. “What about primary?”
If you were entirely without a home, Skylar couldn’t imagine any reason you’d apply for a loan instead of permanent housing.
“Oh, I didn’t apply,” Nelly admitted.
“Why not?” Skylar pursued.
“If I did, I wouldn’t be able to get…” Nelly started. “It was part of the deal, okay?”
“A deal? You mean someone bribed you to leave your home?”
“No, it’s not like – Okay, it is that. But –” Nelly took a deep breath. “You know Kye Peterson?”

She felt him tug the chip free, grateful for its smooth edges. The pain didn’t stop, but it did fade, at least until he pressed the gauze against the open wound. She whimpered into the washcloth again.
“You did good, sunshine,” he told her. “You did so good. Didn’t scream once.”
“Are you…” She swallowed thickly. “Are you sure I won’t need a suture or anything?”
“Shouldn’t,” he said, lifting the gauze to check the incision. “I got some butterfly bandages. Should work well enough.”
He busied himself with dressing her wound, and Erin made herself busy with watching him. His fingers were rough with work and hardship, but gentle. So much about him was surprisingly gentle, soft almost.
“Were you a medic unit?” she asked quietly. “Is that what the J series were?”
He seemed to hesitate then, hand lingering as he made a loop of gauze around her palm. “No. No, J series units were regular infantrymen.”
“Oh.” She felt a little silly for asking. “You’re very good at it.”
