The enormity washed over her again. Lark pressed palms to her
face. "What did you do, Neil?"
"I just told a reporter friend-under condition of anonymity," he winked like that should fucking matter, "—that there was a story there!
There's no way it'll come back to you."
"It already has! I got a call from Marshall promising me legal action
for breaking my NDA!"
"But you didn't do it." He sounded smug, like he'd found a magic
loophole.
"Guess what! If my boyfriend knew it, then I obviously did break my NDA!" which was frustrating because she'd never told Neil or anyone else, but he was smart enough to realize songs he'd heard her practicing in the apartment eventually became international hits over the last year, and she'd been singing them before the album came out.
The problem wasn't that she thought he wouldn't notice. The problem was she'd thought he loved her enough to keep his mouth shut.
The problem was she'd been stupid and trusting.

"Need a jump?" he guessed out the window. If it was much more than that he wouldn't be much help. A face peered around the hood, squinting in his headlights. Well then. "Lark? It's Billy."
Relief gave her the softest expression she'd showed him yet. She came around to his driver's side. How long had she been out here alone? She looked half-frozen. "Hi. My battery's dead, I think."
"I've got cables. Want me to take a look?"
"Thanks. I'm... hopeless about cars."
He folded awkwardly into her driver's seat and tried to start the little car. It didn't make a sound. He dug around behind his seat for jumper cables and after a few minutes with the cars connected he tried her Toyota again. She was shifting from foot to foot, shivering, wasn't dressed for a prolonged stand about in the weather. "Go on and sit in the truck, why don't you? This'll take a few and it'll either work or it won't, no sense getting frostbite over it."
Lark muttered something but after a moment she accepted his suggestion. He tried a few more things but five more minutes later he gave it up as a lost cause. He opened his passenger door and leaned in, relishing the blast of heat. "No luck. I can drop you someplace and we can deal with it tomorrow, or I'll wait with you for a tow."
"We?" she sounded skeptical.
"Not to presume but I work the opening shift at the nearest auto parts store, so I'm probably who you'll need to see for a new battery, unless you take it to a shop and give a middle man the privilege."
"Unbelievable." She hissed under her breath. He stepped back, didn't want to loom over her. Lark closed her eyes, tipped her head toward the ceiling, drew in a slow purposeful breath. Then she straightened and nodded. "Alright. Let me get my things."
So he closed her hood and his, then held the passenger door for her.
She gave him a look. "Are you kidding?"
"No ma'am." He grinned, and maybe it was a little rude to needle her when she was a

Much like my life, my apartment is going up in smoke.

I choke as a black cloud billows out of the oven. My gourmet dino nuggets have turned to fossils.

“Oh fuck me,” I groan, reaching in to grab the sheet pan. I drop it on the stovetop as the lava-like heat bites through my oven mitt. Shrill barks echo beside me in tandem with the smoke alarm that’s now going off. It sounds like the inventory scanners from work in surround sound, live from Hell. Lovely.

“Piper, Phoebe, no!” I shoo the Pomeranians back from the still-open oven. Dog sitting was supposed to be an easy way to make money to get out of this shithole apartment, not burn it down. Even if I dream of it most days.

Gray smoke swirls around my galley kitchen, blending into the dull cabinets and walls. The scene’s taking me back to a night I’d love to bleach from my brain, but the soot clinging for dear life to the yellowed ceiling makes that impossible. “Thanks, Devin,” I spit into the ether, as if he can hear me from Chicago. And a big thanks to me, too, for treating my credit cards like Monopoly money.

Piper takes a piranha chomp toward my fingers—luckily still covered by oven mitts—while I wave at the haze circling their fluffy little heads. They charge forward again. “Get back, I’m trying to save you! This is your fault!”

My mistake for thinking they would be the easy, well-behaved angels I was assured they were. A ‘quick’ potty break turned into chasing a rogue Phoebe around my complex, begging her to slow down, while her sister snapped at my ankle. It took over thirty minutes to wrangle them, and the nuggets paid the price. I guess store-bought is not fine.

The Blue Blood Series by Melissa de la Cruz Is used to represent the wealthy elite vampires living in New York, the fish out of water trope, dark secrets, and others.

The Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice is used to represent young vampires rebelling against old rules and customs. Travel and setting also play a role. A plot point was inspired by the novel.

Yakuza, Japan’s Criminal Underworld by David Kaplan and Alec Dubro, is used to represent some of the vampire rivals business practices. It plays a role in the series arch.
