I think Tisch personally wants this and Mamdani, for pragmatic reasons, has decided this isn't the fight he wants to have with her. Probably because he will need to have bigger fights with her, especially about ICE.

I also don't think ending the policy would generate a backlash that he couldn't handle. Lots of people find cyclists annoying, but few were even paying attention to this policy or would pay attention if he ended it.

I have to wonder if Cherée Buggs's utterly shitbrained ruling reversing the 31st St redesign is an attempt to screw with Mamdani in advance. The Queens Dem Party doesn't like him, Buggs must be part of that machine to even get to be a judge, & Mamdani is known for being for this type of redesign.

If this is accurate, Cheree Buggs (the judge) is a complete buffoon who just set a legal precedent that, if allowed to stand, would prevent the city from any safety redesign that annoys a handful of disgruntled suburbanites who drive to the businesses they inherited from their parents.

A crazy number of people in NYC still seem to think bikers are the enemies of Pedestrians, despite the fact that WE are the ped advocates. FFS, we're the ones pushing daylighting which is easily the biggest Ped safety initiative and *drivers* are fighting it to preserve parking!

It's helpful to remember that when a cyclist collides with a pedestrian, it's vanishingly unlikely to cause a serious injury, unlike when a car collides with a pedestrian or cyclist. I was hurt worse when a runner crashed into me than the one time a cyclist collided with me as a pedestrian.
