I love seeing your kids’ first day of school pics! All of them are beautiful! But saying this with my cybersecurity professional hat on: you probably shouldn’t be posting pictures of your kids. I’m sorry :(

Using tech - ai, phones, games, whatever - is empowering. You have agency and entertainment. Tangible benefits. Having a datacenter plunked in your backyard increasing utility rates and pollution, has no tangible benefits. Trade unions are often pro dc because they do see tangible benefits.

Despite being in an almost constant state of war, the median American knows little about our military outside of what is depicted in Top Gun and Reacher.

The dream of URLs—open, permissionless sharing—is fading. I can't paste URLs into my AIs or send them to my friends and be sure that they'll see what I see. But you know what does work? Screenshots! Screenshots are the successor to URLs. Open, permissionless sharing.

They have a livestream so you can watch people attempt the challenge, and at a company I worked for we all set MEATSWEATS as an alert and rotated who checked the stream. The stream checker would put MEATSWEATS in Slack and we’d watch it like a competitive sport.

My mom was a keyboarding teacher at a high school and would haul home the IIe for me to play with on the weekends. We eventually got one of our own but it was our entire Christmas. Even the power strip was individually wrapped to maximize the number of gifts under the tree.

One of the most privileged life perspective things I have in my career, is working at a place for 10 years. Instead of blaming an anonymous dumb idiot doing something years ago, increasingly it was me. A younger, naïve, idealistic me who thought some other sucker would be maintaining this by then.

I have been a Linux guy for 2 decades and rejoice my family doesn’t use it. I can barely keep my own machines working, I don’t need to spend more of my life debugging somebody else’s Bluetooth audio. I wish it were a better consumer option. Reply guys need to get off social and submit more patches.

“Anti-data center” is often about land use, tax incentives, and impacts on local utility rates. I’m sure there’s people out there who are just anti-tech or anti-ai, but at the end of the day data centers often don’t offer much to the communities they’re in. They’re loud storage facilities.

(For the record I use ai daily but have a hard time blaming detractors for being grumpy about it all. Robotics and ai are rife with charlatans, hype, doom, and the wealthy consolidating more wealth… hard to get excited about! Even this is a story about robots outdoing us in a leisure activity… yay?)

I think the glitch is largely caused by the very leaders making this technology telling us all it is our doom and will disrupt and displace us. Nobody is out there telling us to love it. The very people making it are begging us to hate it. It’s a very strange marketing campaign.

Two papers came out last week that suggest classical asymmetric cryptography might indeed be broken by quantum computers in just a few years. That means we need to ship post-quantum crypto now, with the tools we have: ML-KEM and ML-DSA. I didn't think PQ auth was so urgent until recently.

As someone who, while growing up, had measles, rubella, and many other horrible illnesses now preventable by vaccination, I simply cannot fathom why people want to revert to that time. I spent a lot of time in bed or at the hospital as a child. Yes, I survived, but not by much. Why go back there?
