it's never over! you can always try again. i'm certain that if you choose to make art again, there will be people happy to see you try, no matter what you end up creating

born just in time to want to be an artisan of software but work in an age where the actual software is given as much attention as the asphalt one walks on

it is no longer desirable to build corpo software piece by piece. now, we build a mold of limitations and pour slop into it instead of making engines, we are now casting concrete

hope you do not mind the question: do you have plans to release your future (and maybe even past) music on Bandcamp?

The *moment* chatgpt regurgitates some slop code, it becomes code the programmer has no mental model for, and definitely can't be fucked to read instead of giving it another pass through the bullshit machine. The programmer cannot maintain code, which is like 90% of what programming *is*

It's been fascinating to follow AI industry's journey from "it's smarter than your experts!" to "at least it's cheaper than a human" to "your annual token budget ran out in March"

i think if the industry offers somebody multiple ways of packaging their Linux software in a mostly distro-agnostic way and they go make a deb or rpm their single distribution method we should be able to put that person in a pillory at the mall and throw chewed snus at them

i have no idea how modern audio compression works. looking forward to potentially finding out i'm fucking stupid and 1d gaussian optimization is how it already works

L zard @scalyhat.com · 16/10/2025

today i wonder if an arxiv.org/pdf/2407.01866 -esque approach would work for near-lossless audio compression it's all signals right? so +1 little toy project for when i have time (unless some academic does it faster)

The Mercator projection if it weren’t cropped (click to view full size)

A tall world map projection showing the Earth’s continents at the top, transitioning downward into the icy landscape of Antarctica. Near the South Pole, a research station is visible surrounded by snow and ice. Below that, the image artistically fades into patterns resembling frost crystals or snowflakes, blending scientific imagery with decorative ice textures.

heavy #inktober #inktober2025 I'll pretend that 10.10 does not exist

an ink drawing: a humanoid robot with a knight-helmet-esque head, kneeling; in its chest, a large hole from which an orb attached by wires hangs into the robot's hands; the robot's eyes and the hole are dripping liquid onto the floor. Titled "heavy"

it’s said all the time but I think we should continue to hammer home how insane it is that we got dead-eyed bros trying to sell us robots that will free us from the supposedly cruel burden of “creative careers” instead of the actual cruel burden of “doing menial household chores”

I’m cool with using LLMs for stuff like “writing regexes” but why would I use them to do things my brain actually likes doing and finds rewarding? why would I outsource eating a really good hamburger to someone else? that’s my fucking hamburger

starfish #inktober #inktober2025 first one that I'm actually happy with even if I have no ability to shade evenly

an ink drawing: a segmented six-legged starfish with etched legs hangs on a bright orb; from it's back, a stream of the same brightness emerges, breaking into droplets. Titled "starfish"

Author and filmmaker Justine Bateman on generative AI

"They're trying to convince people they can't do the things they've been doing easily for years - to write emails, to write a presentation. Your daughter wants you to make up a bedtime story about puppies - to write that for you." We will get to the point, she says with a grim laugh, "that you will essentially become just a skin bag of organs and bones, nothing else. You won't know anything and you will be told repeatedly that you can't do it, which is the opposite of what life has to offer. Capitulating all kinds of decisions like where to go on vacation, what to wear today, who to date, what to eat.
People are already doing this. You won't have to process grief, because you'll have uploaded photos and voice messages from your mother who just died, and then she can talk to you via AI video call every day. One of the ways it's going to destroy humans, long before there's a nuclear disaster, is going to be the emotional hollowing-out of people." - author and filmmaker Justine Bateman from a piece by Emine Saner for the Guardian

murky #inktober #inktober2025 TIL i should invest in a more deterministic ink solution than just pouring roughly appropriate amounts of ink and water into a tiny tea bowl
