If you're wondering why authors are getting so rabid here: First Anthropic stole our books. Then we got denied compensation because of US unjust copyright law and publishers failing to meet their contractual obligations. Then publishers and agents apparently claimed author shares. Now this.

I wouldn't mind paying more if we had an actual functional transport network. But I assume they'll increase the price and make it somehow worse at the same time

Academia is a job. If you have a job, you are an employee. If you are an employee you should have a union. QED.

For the avoidance of doubt, this is complete BS. if you are a post-doc (or worker of any description frankly) and you have the option of joining a union, you absolutely should.

Himalayan landscapes have always experienced landslides, avalanches and floods. But climate warming is changing the background conditions: glaciers are retreating, slopes are being destabilised, new lakes are forming, large volumes of loose sediment are being exposed—making hazards more connected.

The flood in Nepal shows us why the claim we can just "adapt" to #ClimateChange is so dishonest (or foolhardy): climate change will break and remake our places so we cannot live in them safely, often with sudden and overwhelming violence. There is no such thing as bouncing back.

It is odd that in the last decade the big push for academia by the media & many academics themselves has been ‘did we take DEI too far?’ And not How did Jeffrey Epstein get tied up with so many star academics at leading universities with no one apparently ringing alarm bells?

In the Renaissance people theorized, since the Aeneid is great, if you wrote poems made only of words & phrases from the Aeneid rearranged they should be great too, since a great source regurgitated should yield greatness. They produced NOTHING we still read. Thinking about that a lot lately.

🥵 Europe has been affected by a terrible heatwave, with impacts across the continent & record-breaking temperatures in many countries. The @ipcc.bsky.social #AR6 conclusions show that that heat extremes have become more intense & more frequent across the world due to human-induced climate change.
Changes in temperature extremes as function of global warming, from Fig. SPM.6 of IPCC AR6 WGI (https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg1/downloads/report/IPCC_AR6_WGI_SPM.pdf); based on data from IPCC AR6 WGI Chapter 11 (https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg1/downloads/report/IPCC_AR6_WGI_Chapter11.pdf)

ICYMI -- this is a big deal, and we have a limited time to comment. We need everyone, including (especially!) non-academics to 1) make public comments, 2) write op eds, 3) contact your elected representatives, and 4) ask societies and advocacy groups to speak out against this and mobilize members.

If generative AI tools generate inappropriate language, plagiarized content, biased content, errors, mistakes, incorrect references, or misleading content, and that output is included in scientific works, it is the responsibility of the author(s). 2/

We have recently clarified our penalties for this. If a submission contains incontrovertible evidence that the authors did not check the results of LLM generation, this means we can't trust anything in the paper. 3/

The penalty is a 1-year ban from arXiv followed by the requirement that subsequent arXiv submissions must first be accepted at a reputable peer-reviewed venue. 4/

Examples of incontrovertible evidence: hallucinated references, meta-comments from the LLM ("here is a 200 word summary; would you like me to make any changes?"; "the data in this table is illustrative, fill it in with the real numbers from your experiments") end/"
