This is jaw-dropping. For almost 96% of coal plants in the world, replacing them with new solar/wind is cheaper than operating the current plant. Obviously, cost isn't the only factor keeping them running, but this should drive *very* rapid fleet turnover.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

I think about this point by Adorno so often of late.
My thesis about this would be that all
humans deep down, whether they admit this or not, know that it
would be possible or it could be different. Not only could they live
without hunger and probably without anxiety, but they could also
live as free human beings. At the same time, the social apparatus has
hardened itself against people, and thus, whatever appears before
their eyes all over the world as attainable possibility, as the evident
possibility of fulfillment, presents itself to them as radically impossible. And when people universally say today what was once reserved
only for philistines in more harmless times, "Oh, that's just utopian;
oh, that's possible only in the land of Cockaigne. Basically that
shouldn't be like that at all," then I would say that this is due to the
situation compelling people to master the contradiction between the
evident possibility offulfillment and the just as evident impossibility
offulfillment only in this way, compelling them to identify themselves
with this impossibility and to make this impossibility into their own
affair. In other words, to use Freud, they "identify themselves with
the aggressor" and say that this should not be, whereby they feel that
it is precisely this that should be, but they are prevented from attaining
it by a wicked spell cast over the world.

Key elements of narratives associated with BILD's coverage—such as the controversial term “heating hammer”—gained widespread traction across the German media. In our analyzed BILD corpus containing 333 relevant articles the word hammer was used more than 250 times, in different writings for “heating hammer” (228 times) but also in variations such as “energy hammer” or “housing hammer”. The name Habeck is mentioned 44 times as a direct prefix. Between January 2023 and March 2024, 1100 articles outside of BILD used the term (here, all results matching the query “Heizungshammer” OR “Heizhammer” OR “Heiz-Hammer” OR “Heizungs-Hammer”). Similarly, “Heizungsverbot” (heating ban) appeared in 800 articles, reinforcing a narrative of restriction. The framing of the law as driven by “ideology” featured in 660 articles (matching the query Gebäudeenergiegesetz AND (Ideologie OR ideologisch)), while references of public “uncertainty” (“Verunsicherung”) linked to the heating law surfaced in over 2500 articles, underscoring the broader societal unease surrounding the policy debate. Only a limited number of media outlets delved into the specifics of the rather moderate provisions in the law and explicitly covered the campaign opposing the legislation, notably niche media such as “Klimareporter.de” [21] and the fact checker “Volksverpetzer.de” [22].
