As noted earlier this summer, episodes like this in California will become less rare as climate (and, thus, tropical/subtropical oceans) continue to warm due to climate change. One of the first studies on this was just published earlier this summer.

Ocean temperatures anomalies of this magnitude are, quite frankly, astonishing (and yes, they are clearly record-breaking)--made possible by a combination of an extremely strong El Niño acting atop a severe pre-existing marine heatwave amplified by climate change.

Rachel is actually expected to *restrengthen* slightly into strong TS, with sustained winds around 60-65mph prior to landfall. That is not far below hurricane strength (74 mph). Despite a relatively stable & dry airmass, ocean temperatures are *10-13F* above average in vicinity.
Map of Pacific basin-wide SST anomalies. Most locations are extremely warming, especially the equatorial zone (associated with a record-strength El Nino event) and right west of the coast of Baja CA (in Rachel's path).

Beige marks land and gray marks missing ocean values. The main colour scale spans -2 to +10°F, with white at zero. Hot pink marks anomalies above +10°F.
