A chart showing the rate of deaths after an ectopic pregnancy, comparing states that banned abortion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022 with those that did not. At the start of the chart, in 2014, the rate is higher in states with abortion bans, but the rates in the two groups of states are not far apart. The rate increases in both groups of states, but the climb is much steeper in states that banned abortion.

Dear @mayor.nyc.gov, it’s 9pm & F trains are expressing. Half the train exited at 7th Ave to wait for a local. Why is that? Because thousands of us live at 15th & Ft. Hamilton. I get the need to express during rush hour when trains are packed and sluggish (which happens every day) but at 9pm, why?

Published in the Boston Globe a few weeks before ChatGPT was released in 2022.
I tell my students that writing — in the classroom, in your journal, in a memo at work — is a way of bringing order to our thinking or of breaking apart that order as we challenge our ideas. We look at the evidence around us. We consider ideas we disagree with. And we try to bring a shape to it all. Sometimes my students see the process differently. They see writing a paper as a hoop they are being asked to jump through, a way for me to evaluate them and pronounce them successful or not. In other words, they see writing solely as a product. If the end point rather than the process were indeed all that mattered, then there might be good reason to turn to GPT-3. But if, as I believe is the case, we write to make sense of the world, then the risks of turning that process over to AI are much greater.

My most pollyanna take is that this complete inability to combat slop is going to tank Amazon's market share of books sold and drive folks back to in-person shopping at bookstores.
Retailers Lack Effective Tools to Combat AI Slop
A research paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research confirms what consumers and publishers have long been aware of: There’s more AI slop for sale than ever.

Based on an analysis of Amazon data—which, they say, dominates the global ebook market with more than two-thirds of the market share—the NBER notes that the number of new books available nearly tripled between 2022 and 2025, which coincides with the incidence of AI used in books.

"Detected AI use is roughly zero through 2022, rises to 30 percent in 2023, to 45 percent in 2024, and surpasses 60 percent during 2025," they state, while "the number and quality of human-authored books has remained stable."

The NBER says that the average quality of new books has gone down as AI use has gone up. "Books with detected AI are substantially worse than human-authored books, so that much of the new work is of little value to consumers," the report states.
