It would already be 19th November so I’d be safe, I think…Is it a participatory reading group with conversation or more of a talk situation where I could join from bed with my camera off and nobody would know? I would love to attend but midnight to 1am might be unrealistic

Yes, although as a teenager I think I was sneaking books out of my parents’ shelves and buying things for 10p in charity shops and at jumble sales rather than talking to people. But it‘s true that some odd things came through v specific channels, e.g. The Silent Twins from a friend‘s mum

I don’t think that changed all that much until well into the 2000s!

Current-borne, wave-flung, tugged hugely by the whole might of ocean, the jellyfish drifts in the tidal abyss. The light shines through it, and the dark enters it.

(I think ‘why did I love it so much?’ is a question I’m always asking, one way or another. Fatally primary source person here)

*what odd obsessions did you have with certain books, is what I really mean. Trainspotting isn’t a strange choice for a teenager, exactly, but why did I love it so much? And the same for the others on my list

Just interested in the fact that the things I loved and attached to aren't necessarily the things I’d recommend now, usually a tension I try to ignore, and yet — would I give a book about hostages in Beirut to a teenager today? (Of course this is also about how you encounter books and where)

for me: An Evil Cradling - Brian Keenan (have read so many times) The Women’s Room - Marilyn French (ditto) Down and Out in Paris and London & Keep the Aspidistra Flying - George Orwell Trainspotting - Irvine Welsh The L-Shaped Room - Lynne Reid Banks (not so strange but I wonder how it reads now)

I've been obsessed by Margaret Bourke-White's 1937 photograph of a Louisiana sharecropper's house lined with newspapers since I first saw it in Thomas C. Leonard's News For All years ago. It captures the ubiquity &, one might say, the stickiness of newspapers so poignantly. Plus, of course, the dog
A black and white photograph of a young African American boy standing in an interior doorway of a house next to a hound dog. The boy is wearing a shirt and pants with a large hole in the knee. The floor consists of unvarnished planking, and the walls are lined entirely with newspaper sheets, although some may perhaps be from magazines. One gets the impressive that they are decorative as much as they are protective.

my mum used to put newspaper under the wheels of my little brother‘s pram when it had been wet out, mainly the Mirror which my older brother read for the football. I read a lot of inappropriate tabloid stories aged seven or eight, kneeling on the floor…

Queer Bibliography
TAKING STOCK
Manchester, UK and online
2-4 September 2027

details overleaf ❧ ❧ ❧call for proposals

Taking Stock marks the fifth annual Queer Bibliography conference and is a chance to pause and reflect and to queerly attend to the many meanings of “stock” in bibliography.

Where do we find ourselves and our work?
How might we trace queer histories of queer bibliography? How can we imagine critical futures for bibliographical enquiry within and beyond its traditional academic locations?
From the raw materials of books to the origins and shapes of personal, commercial, and institutional collections, how does "stock" participate in the production, articulation, and study of queer textuality and textual communities?
What is queer about materiality, the ecology of books, and the processes of making and engaging with (collections of) physical textual objects?

We invite participants to engage in stock-taking or to reflect on bibliographical stock, broadly defined. We welcome meta, theoretical, and historiographical work that takes stock of queer bibliography, and we welcome proposals that relate to “stock” in bibliography, book history, and reception studies.

❧ abstracts due 29 January ☙

Second week on strike with UCU Edinburgh. We will be on strike for five weeks - taking out the entire first half of term, up to the first assessments - but we could be back in the classroom tomorrow if management withdrew the threat of compulsory redundancies.
