Apparently it #superbowl Sunday. What could be more superb than the oldest representation of one we know of from Chauvet Cave, France? This long eared Owl was drawn by fingers scraped through the wet sediment on the cave wall 32,000 years ago. 🏺🦣

To our surprise, the level of IBD sharing between Zlatý kůň and two individuals from Ranis was in line with a 5th or 6th degree relatedness! This close relationship confirms the ~45 ky age for Zlatý kůň, and suggests that she belonged to a group associated with the LRJ technocomplex. (7/n)

The specimens date back to 42-49 ky calBP, are associated with the LRJ technocomplex, and were previously identified as human bones by @hrougier.bsky.social based on morphology and @dorotheamylop.bsky.social et al. via proteomics in a study we published earlier this year. (2/n)

I am very happy to share our new paper on the genetics of some of the first modern humans who ever lived in Europe! We sequenced nuclear DNA from 13 specimens from Ranis in Germany, and found that they belonged to at least 6 individuals. www.nature.com/articles/s41... (1/n)
