The thing is, we don't know what knowledge and capacity future generations will need No knowledge is absolute - science works by a process of removing falsehoods; humanities work by interpretation and reinterpretation Whilst a discipline may not seem relevant today, who knows what tomorrow needs?

I tried to give our new part-time PGR a class timetable that would fit her work schedule by limiting her campus days. The Curriculum and Assessment Office told me that the degree wasn't validated for that. 🤦 The Timetable changes yearly, and we have no say.

Careers Report - The Fragrance Foundation UK
New research finds that 14–16-year-olds are dissatisfied with the support they receive during their career preparation and that simple interventions can deliver significant turnarounds. Commissioned by The Fragrance Foundation UK, funded by The British Academy, and conducted by Kingston University Senior Lecturer in Organisational Behaviour, Dr. Sarah Otner, alongside the careers platform ERIC, this report identifies 1) young job seekers’ perceived features of a “good job”; 2) the elements of their ideal industry engagement; and 3) the advantages of highlighting occupational variety alongside industry features.

This is also where we reveal/remind that almost everything goes into General Taxation. NI is not ring-fenced for the NHS and pensions. Air Passenger Duty (APD)? Not saved for green initiatives; goes on the general ledger. Tobacco stamp doesn't go to the NHS. It's all magic accounting.

When the "what is a reasonable pension income?" conversation expects you to have no housing costs and live in a right-size-right-location property, then that changes whether housing is an investment or "just" shelter (which it never is).

I think people would feel differently if the amount that they could invest in their pension each month were greater than or equal to their mortgage payment. Then, your retirement will grow, and you can afford housing fluctuations.

Next year's SP will be the equivalent of an apprenticeship wage. You would have to value age-related benefits also, as a package. The state guaranteed income in Sweden is much lower than the UK's, but I'm sure you're right that other places give more.
000
Sarah Otner @sarahotner.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Or seen from another angle, a special floor. Perhaps economists could create a CPI basket that is typical for pensioners and use that for the SP calculation. I don't like the number of assumptions that would require, but it's worth considering rather than the 3-stat race we currently have.

Sarah Otner @sarahotner.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
I didn't say that it shouldn't rise at all. And it's true an income of *only* SP (soon to be £13K/yr) is a survival amount and only if one doesn't have housing costs. The amount it rises should reflect the rise in the cost of living, as it affects everyone. Not with a special ceiling.

Are they still charging >£30 yet disallowing photos? Will they then provide high-quality take home imagery (not just a dinky postcard)? I agree with the argument that it would keep the line moving and reduce the risk of damage. But it's also a once-in-a-lifetime experience that wants documenting.
