Mingzi Xu & Lata Kalra explore two @plosbiology.org studies that identify a hotspot of animal #communication signal tempos between 0.5-4 Hz, hypothesizing that delta waves in the receivers’ #brains may drive its #evolution 🧪 Paper #1: plos.io/4ccWuhh Paper #2: plos.io/4ejLRcl Primer: plos.io/4egZ71l
Slow tempos within signals are shaped by neurological biases in receivers’ brains. (a) Schematic illustration of fast and slow tempos, shown as the rate at which individual elements were repeated and the amplitude envelope that parses individual elements, respectively, within animal signals. (b) Illustrative density plot for signal tempos across taxa and signal modalities. Individual curves represent different taxa. Data from Amichay et al. and Piette et al. converged onto the finding that slow tempos in signals show a conserved local concentration below 4 Hz. The musical note, light bulb, and fiddler crab represent acoustic, bioluminescent, and motion-based signals, respectively. Taxonomic groups are illustrated using silhouettes of mouse, bird, frog, fish, and cricket, respectively. (c) Illustrative figures depicting main findings from Piette et al. Left panel: bar plot showing the OU model outperforming the Brownian Motion model in a Bayesian framework, suggesting potential stabilizing selection on the conserved slow signal tempos; Right panel: illustrative figure showing convergence to an optimal tempo within the delta wave range under the OU model in mammals and birds. (d) Illustration of response by an example neurocircuit consisting of slow oscillators within a receiver’s brain from Amichay et al. Data showed that circuit response is robust to its topology (i.e., the wiring of neurons). Neurons and circuit topology are represented by triangles and bifurcating lines, respectively. The numeric value below each triangle represents the intrinsic oscillation frequency of the neuron. (e) Illustrative plot depicting entrainment of an example small circuit to a driving tempo within the delta band from a neuro-computational experiment by Amichay and colleagues

This is such a cool study, arising from a chance observation in the field. The authors were filming the flashing of fireflies in Thailand, but noticed that the chirping of nearby crickets seemed to be synced to the flashes...
Quote: "In the summer of 2022, members of our research group went on a field excursion to Thailand to film the Pteropyx malaccae firefly, famous for its synchronous displays. While filming, we noticed that nearby crickets (most likely of the Podoscirtinae subfamily—unfortunately, we failed to catch any specimen to confirm the exact species) often seemed to chirp in synchrony with the fireflies. Luckily, our microphones were on. Were the rhythmic communications at near-identical tempos (see Fig 1A, B) a case of interspecies, intermodal synchrony? Detailed analysis showed that the crickets and fireflies were not actually synchronized. But their signaling tempos, both close to 2.4 Hz, differed by only about 10%."

Do animals have a favored tempo for communicating with each other? This study reveals a hotspot of 0.5-4 Hz for #communication across distinct species & modalities, hypothesizing that this may driven by biophysical commonalities of the receivers' #neurons @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4ccWuhh
Tempo comparison across scales, taxa, modalities, and media. Top left: Spectrogram of cricket(s) chirping for 1 min. Top right: Spectrogram of nearby fireflies flashing for 1 min (N = 21). The colorbars in both heatmaps correspond to Power/frequency (dB/Hz). Bottom: Typical tempos at which different animals signal vs. their respective mean body weights on a logarithmic scale (N = 24). The plot consists of six main groups: insects, amphibians, birds, fish, crustaceans (these last four in an overlapping region due to similar weights—note that the labels here don’t necessarily correspond to specific points as the species are mixed), and mammals. The icons (light bulb, speaker, and a moving human) represent the form of the signal (light, sound, or gesture). Note that the signals are mostly transmitted through air, with two examples through water (both fish, written in blue).
