CODA: @mattgertz.bsky.social catches Rs revving up the old migrant caravan again. This makes it more urgent for Dems to speak to the fact that immigrants are getting viciously demonized and subjected to cruelty/injustice all around us. Let's not get inured to it: www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/fox...

“Most Americans are pro-immigrant,” Talarico says. “Throughout US history, immigrants have always made us richer and stronger.” Trump's barbarities have opened the way to a new consensus. Talarico is giving voice to it in moral language that Dems can learn from. 5/5 newrepublic.com/article/2160...

Talarico has an immigration plan that in its broad strokes is very humane and pro-immigrant. He says our border should be like a "front porch" with a "lock" and a "welcome mat." Both of those are important. The "welcome mat" in his plan deserves more attention. 4/ newrepublic.com/article/2160...

I've obtained new data showing that in 3 House districts in South Texas, big majorities of Latinos are swinging hard against Trump on immigration. This is where the "multiracial working-class realignment" behind Trump restrictionism was said to be happening. 3/ newrepublic.com/article/2160...

The other day, Talarico leaned hard into the case for immigration as a positive good for our country in a way you rarely hear from Dems. He has a real theory of the case: Trump's cruelty and barbarism have opened space for new moral arguments, a new consensus. 2/ newrepublic.com/article/2160...

Something remarkable is happening: James Talarico is running an expansively pro-immigrant campaign in Texas, a state Trump won by 14 points, speaking in Biblical terms about our duty to "the stranger." And it's resonating. That's seismic. 1/ (new piece) newrepublic.com/article/2160...

In Texas, Something Seismic Is Happening—and It’s All Trump’s Fault
Thanks to the economy and ICE, Trump has lost Texas Latinos. And James Talarico is developing a humane pro-immigrant message that’s resonating—even in this ultra-Trumpy state.

My own (probably naive) take is that the immigration views/attacks as envisioned by Trump and far-right diehards have very little resonance beyond the right-wing base. That they are now a layer of our atmosphere reflects the disproportionate power those folks have in politics and media.

Media companies who accept taxpayer money for Trump’s illegal campaign ads should be investigated and prosecuted if appropriate. Media executives accepting this money should be subpoenaed to appear before a Democratic Congress to explain why they are complicit in a crime.

Gist of government position is that the “best reading “ of the TRO is that it ordered only that the prisoners not be taken out of the country, when they already were so no violation of order. Requires ignoring oral order + other evidence that Boasberg’s order was they not be delivered to El Salvador

Back to smith hearing, the Rs are assessed with smith having subpoenaed their toll records (i.e. records of numbers dial not conversation). But that move was completely orthodox. If not mandatory to learn what Trump and meadows were up to that day. And the idea that it’s speech or debate is risible.
