The first wiring diagram of the whole brain of a fruit fly, containing around 140,000 neurons and over 50 million connections, is presented in a paper in Nature. The work offers opportunities to study how the brain functions in greater detail than previously possible. go.nature.com/3ZRAsuv 🧪

This is so cool. I did my Ph.D. on a different insect, and we didn't have this sort of technological capabilities back then, but it's amazing to get to understand at this deep level. Kudos to everyone involved in this work.

Connectomes are accelerating, from the ~300 neurons of C. elegans 40 years ago to the fly brain last year (FAFB, bbc.com/news/articles/c0lw0nxw71po). The BANC is the next big step, a full CNS, brain and nerve cord together, a powerful hypothesis-generation engine. 2/18

Functional probing of neuronal subtypes via intersectional expression of optogenetic actuators reveals non-linear components in a linear circuit
Li and Kumar et al. created strains expressing Chrimson in specific TRN subtypes and conducted high-throughput behavioral analysis after optogenetically activating them singly or in combination. They found that although the entire touch circuit integrates opposing stimuli linearly, this balance is lost if only part of the circuit is activated.
