For these AI boosters, the point isn't to create an AI that can do the work as well as a person - it's to condition the world to accept the lower-quality work that will come from a chatbot. 36/

“AI will kill us all” is how the tech industry, especially rich people in it, avoid talking about real world problems—ones they’re causing, exacerbating, or neglecting—while still thinking themselves good. “I’m better than all that,” they say. “I got high with my friends and BSed about the future.”

During the big waves of privatisation in the 1980s and 1990s, the debate was framed around who can manage production more efficiently, the state or capital. Everyone bought into this frame and we forgot the more important question, which is who gets to decide what is produced, and for whose benefit.

Funny how important 'investment' is to this Prime Minister while he slashes budgets of important institutions and fails to meaningfully invest more in research and the knowledge economy.

Pay attention to who people in elite and establishment circles encourage you to blame: up or down. If they encourage you to blame people with little or less power (marginalized) they’re intentionally dissuading you from blaming the people who make the decisions and hold power

Though there are many obvious ways this could be made better, I want to stress here that *you shouldn't have to do this at all*. It's entirely backwards. The process for *not* being spied on should look like this: * Step one: Exist. * Step two: There is no step two. 42/

It's cheaper and more robust to rebuild our economy so that it no longer serves the finance system, returning finance to "its pre-1970s role as a provider of a relatively limited set of services to the real economy." 42/

Canadians have accumulated nearly $3 trillion in retirement savings, yet have almost no democratic say over how that money is invested. Why are our pensions financing fossil expansion and foreign capital instead of a livable future? @nickgottlieb.bsky.social makes the case for reclaiming them.

The case for reclaiming Canada’s pension trillions
A future where Canadian workers can safely retire needs investment. Our pension funds are well positioned to provide that, but it requires a much more fundamental transformation than Carney is willing...

US data centers for AI tend to run on more fossil fuels than renewables → they produce proportionally more climate pollution → which is supersizing extreme weather → which is now the #1 risk to data centers themselves. The very definition of "coming right back around to bite you."

Value(s) was a lie. Value(s) was simply a tool to sharpen a political brand. "The consequences of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s methodical cuts to Canada’s environmental rules are not being communicated honestly to the public, two former government advisors say," writes @meyer.bsky.social. #CdnPoli
The government under Prime Minister Mark Carney has “repealed or weakened virtually every climate policy and regulation that Canada had developed in the last decade,” a former member of Canada’s Net-Zero Advisory Body told MPs.
Two former members of the body said last week they were left uninformed of new policy directions on fossil fuel development and emissions reductions while their previous advice was ignored.
Canada’s goal of reaching net-zero emissions — and helping to slow the effects of climate change — by 2050 is now “out of reach,” they said.
