The Globe editorial board thinks it can get away with shilling for residential school denial because they know a vast majority of its readership never read a single goddamn page of the TRC report. Anyway, listen to this by @sandela.bsky.social @nolore.bsky.social sandyandnora.com/episode-378-...

These fools can't go harder than this because then they'd either have to admit they were wrong about policing in general, or admit that they're absolutely fine with the way police are protected doing everything ICE does, targeted at communities that don't matter to them.

You see how quickly this normally obstinate administration went to outfit ICE with body cams? That's because they are ultimately a surveillance tool for the law enforcement agency outfitted with them. Not a tool of accountability. And research shows they can ultimately increase police violence.

It’s not just @sandela.bsky.social Sandy Hudson’s razor-sharp analysis putting policing in context that’s so valuable, it’s her clear and convincing focus that we can actually change things. Listen to this and follow her on the Sandy and Nora podcast, you won’t regret it ❤️

Prime example of why body cams don't work and you must defund the police (incl. ICE) to stop them from doing what they're meant to do, which is use violence to control particular populations for the benefit of the wealthy/powerful and to maintain social stratifications

I hope all the people who did their darndest to create a "we went too far on policing" narrative in the post-2020 whitelash see that their blathering apologism justifies every fascist thing ICE, the FBI, the DEA, and other law enforcement agencies are doing rn.

This "law enforcement" justification for the clearly illegal strike on Venezuela is absolutely outrageous and should be reported as such. The death toll is now **80 people** and the **American dictatorial gov't** is like "this was just a simple arrest coming from an indictment, wym?" Unfuckingreal

Carney's statement is finally out. Apparently we "welcome the opportunity for freedom and democracy" through authoritarian, imperialist, illegal military operations. Elbows so low we're squatting at this point:
An image of Mark Carney's tweet reading "One of the first actions taken by Canada’s new government in March 2025 was to impose additional sanctions on Nicolás Maduro’s brutally oppressive and criminal regime — unequivocally condemning his grave breaches of international peace and security, gross and systematic human rights violations, and corruption. Canada has not recognised the illegitimate regime of Maduro since it stole the 2018 election. The Canadian government therefore welcomes the opportunity for freedom, democracy, peace, and prosperity for the Venezuelan people.

Canada has long supported a peaceful, negotiated, and Venezuelan-led transition process that respects the democratic will of the Venezuelan people. In keeping with our long-standing commitment to upholding the rule of law, sovereignty, and human rights, Canada calls on all parties to respect international law. We stand by the Venezuelan people’s sovereign right to decide and build their own future in a peaceful and democratic society."

"Canada attaches great importance to resolution of crises through multilateral engagement and is in close contact with international partners about ongoing developments. We are first and foremost ready to assist Canadians through our consular officials and our embassy in Bogotá, Colombia, and will continue to support Venezuelan refugees."

No longer needed?? The problem has only gotten worse. 2024 was the deadliest year for police killings on record. Before that it was 2023. Before that, 2022....and onward. Deeply frustrated by the popular narrative that there was deep change for Black people following 2020.

It is important to note that the police did NOTHING to prevent or stop the mass shooting in Manhattan. We need other strategies than sending SWAT teams after everyone (including the shooter) is already dead.

Rümeysa Öztürk describes the library in the prison where she was held for 45 days for co-authoring an op-ed
After many requests, I finally accessed what turned out to be the saddest and smallest library I have ever seen. I was surprised to find that the books were not categorized by author or Dewey number but size. I tried to find a book before my allotted time ended and picked a cooking book; the second time I got a novel. I began flipping through the pages in search of solace, as books have always been my safe haven. To my surprise, I discovered handwritten notes scattered throughout the book, dated and written by various detainees over time. These messages were filled with reminders of hope, strength, and the assurance that this, too, shall pass. Tears welled up in my eyes as I read their heartfelt expressions. It’s incredible how human beings can find ways to uplift each other, transcending time, space, and borders if they want to and if they choose to. I continued to turn the pages, holding on to the hope of finding brighter moments in this terrifying situation—all thanks to the kindness of people I had never met.
