New lab preprint: @grace-padilla.bsky.social studied how zebrafish respond to chemical cues of death and decay. Brief exposure initiated a persistent state, but not through olfaction. Instead, these cues' basic pH was detected by trigeminal neurons and TrpA1 channels www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Decay chemicals activate a pH-sensing pathway to initiate a persistent state
Animals use multiple sensory systems to identify signs of danger, including dead conspecifics. Fish can identify decaying conspecifics from chemosensory cues, which prompt a long-lasting avoidance; th...

The first Danionella paper from the lab. Danionella cerebrum is transparent, so you can see all of the internal organs. But what sensory information are the organs sending to the brain? In our new preprint, Emily Bayer wanted to find out. 1/4 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Yet another cool story just came out of the ever-so-capable hands of Roy Harpaz (@royharpaz.bsky.social). www.nature.com/articles/s41... Roy showed that larval zebrafish will adapt and get used to crowded conditions, and that they are then, later on, less sensitive about their personal space.

Looking for a PhD position at the intersection of AI, imaging, and gene therapy? Apply for this position in my lab: tinyurl.com/2a2v6tvx Part of sfb1690.uni-goettingen.de to study hearing, vision, and more. Plus, you can create pretty pictures as the one below :).
A cochlea imaged in light-sheet microscopy (right) with staining for spiral ganglion neurons (red) and inner hair cells (blue). You will develop AI-based methods to analyze these structures, for example via segmentation of the individual cells (right) that will support gene therapy development for hearing loss and a better overall understanding of the anatomy of hearing.

Two curved rising lines on a linear plot. The difference between the lines appears smaller as the lines become steeper, but that is an illusion.
