think it might be interesting to co-relate people's opinions of Nolan's Odyssey against which translation they prefer or are most familiar with. For me it's Lattimore and I was, let us say… disappointed. /1

This is the perfect time to make a film adaptation of Ulysses and transpose the cast of Nolan's Odyssey (Matt Damon as Bloom, Anne Hathaway as Molly, Tom Holland as Stephen, etc.).

I recommend people watch WALKER by Alex Cox. Forgive the trailer, they had to market it somehow, but it’s a minor miracle that Universal Pictures even theatrically released such a strong indictment of US foreign policy in Latin America at all. It’s on Internet Archive youtu.be/XImi7fT7-J0

Amazingly, even though Finnegans Wake is, fundamentally, fanfic about Lord Mayors of Dublin, there are no references to NYC mayors. Although, to be fair, the only ones who might have conceivably caught Joyce's attention would be Fiorello LaGuardia and 'Beau' Jimmy Walker.

Richard Ellmann, James Joyce, and Literary Biography: a talk by Zachary Leader, Trinity Long Room Hub, 5.00pm, 15 May #JamesJoyce @tlrhub.bsky.social
Richard Ellmann’s James Joyce (1959) has been called “the greatest literary biography of the twentieth century.” This talk, by the critic and biographer Zachary Leader, tells the story of the book and its maker, in the process arguing for the artistic claims not only of Ellmann himself, a remarkable man, but of literary biography in general.
