Read Helen and Alcestis with her once upon a time, as a PhD student. It was wild.

I’d say plant it in a local marsh, but it might not like an Illinois winter much, either.

It’s the third-person imperative that offends the most. This bard is manifestly uninspired.

In media interviews especially, I’m hearing a “thank you” more and more frequently answered by “thank _you_” (I.e., ‘no, it is I who should be thanking you’). Whether this is another bizarre form of 🇨🇦 politeness I can’t say, but it comes across poorly.

Note to self: showing the kids Super Mario World before they’d fully mastered Super Mario 3 was probably a mistake.

Bras d’Or Lake, in Cape Breton — introducing the kids to the land of my ancestors. Holiday doesn’t get much better than this.
An over-the-shoulder view of Bras d’Or Lake in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, where the waves are rolling gently and the mountains on the opposite shore loom in the distance. A pre-teen girl stands with her back to the lens on the right side of the frame, looking out onto the water.

After five weeks of work, the 2026 Summer Institute in Papyrology has concluded. Feeling very grateful to the hardworking students, instructors, and especially our funders, especially the American Society of Papyrologists and @sshrc-crsh.canada.ca.

Absolutely: there are new features that I’m excited to work with, but also gobs of under-the-hood tweaking to modernize code that is in some places a couple of decades old. Big kudos to Duke for the institutional commitment and leadership.

Ancient scrolls are being ‘read’ by machine learning – with human knowledge to detect language and make sense of them
However exciting the technological developments may be, the task of reading and analyzing the Greek and Latin texts recovered from the papyri will fall to human beings.

Good god, the bots are going to ruin everything. Someone needs to set up some sort of centralized whitelist for institutional ip ranges that services like the BnF can simply adopt en masse. Or are institutions to blame, too?
