Pick up DWELLER IN DARKNESS, the conclusion of the Deadlights Duology from @timberghostpress.bsky.social as well as the first book THE MYSTERY OF THE PALE KING. Two novellas you could devour in an afternoon.

The plot and all the details would follow suit. Whew, that was a lot more than I thought it would be. I hope it's useful to read about how the story sausage gets made. I know I was obsessed with other authors' processes when I was coming up as I struggled to find my own. Might add more later.

the reader's brain than first or third can and opens up the story to a deeper interpretation. I've grown enough as a writer by this point that I didn't need to know what that interpretation was going be exactly, just the feeling I wanted and knowing as long as I kept moving toward that feeling then

In a story where the unreliable narrator can be deployed. Playing with perspective and getting into the readers heads is a lot of fun of writing for me and that's where I decided on a whim to include bookends in the second person. When second person is used correctly it engages a different part of

But I was intrigued by body horror not as a pure exercise in horror but in the New Weird tradition of looking at things through alien lenses, what if body horror accompanied enlightenment or an outgrowth of mold became an outgrowth of empathy? That to me felt like rich narrative terrain, especially

Is where the idea of a story about moral rot becoming a story about the capital-R Rot and its malign ghostgrass (GRRM stole Carcosa, I'm stealing ghostgrass, and the wheel keeps turning). What's great about body horror is its ability to take the theoretical or philosophical and make it visceral.

on that spectrum of masculinity, the toxic forms of which are both a thematic and plot concern in the duology. I wrote a lot about the Rot elsewhere recently so I won't reiterate here but the part of the fun of spec fic is getting to literalize or make tactile the metaphorical and impossible which

Thus was born Cassius, a name deliberately mirroring the antagonist and deuteragonist from PALE KING. In this way, I was able to play a trope fav of mine, the Three Faces of Adam (consisting of the Hunter, the Lord and the Prophet) and invert the ages for thematic effect. My three Cassius are all

to change because now I was angry and the story would be too. It would no longer be about building a new world but the end of the old one. To properly tell it, I needed a new POV on the inside so to speak, a character who demonstrated that poisonous ideology and its never-ending ripples of harm.

The first draft also followed Faron, the MC from Pale King, from the get-go but very soon after I started to draft, the 2024 U.S. presidential election occurred and enraged me that my country was so stupid and selfish. I quickly realized the story I was writing, a vessel for my feelings, needed

I attempted to write a more traditional third-person limited POV for DWELLER but within just a few pages I realized the book needed to be an in-universe document as well. The metatextual layer and the inherent dread of a doomed journal, a classic trope, was too essential to the style and structure.

I became intrigued by the duology format to make the book the other half of a whole, which became a guiding thematic and creative principle I could use to determine what elements to include as well as the overall story's vibe and direction. While MYSTERY OF THE PALE KING was epistolary, early on

My specific form of OCD leads me to hyperfixate. When I'm writing, this is actually a boon, because I can fall down rabbit holes and walk out with a story or a book generally feeling good about myself. But when I'm doing social media, it means both my mental health and writing take a nosedive.

Okay so I don’t think this is true - historically speaking, mass violence consistently comes from an attempted rejection (rather than a *lack*) of empathetic impulses, which exist whether we want them to or not, and desire to distance oneself from an externalized target.

Reading, and writing, are holy. I love reading novels because they tell me something. They say: "this is what someone believed enough to dedicate months or years of their life to say." This is just as true for the trashiest pulp as it is for the highest literature.

This phenomenon of fanatical self-hatred, particularly this strain of internalized misogyny, became a preoccupation of mine in my latest book DWELLER IN DARKNESS. Below, the MC walks in on his stepfather's abuse of his mother Claudia and his failed intervention results in this scene:
To both of our surprise, Claudia stepped between me and him. “I am his mother. The punishment is mine.”Again, like the fool I am, my hopes rose. Then she looked at me with a disgust I will never forget. “Watch and do not interfere.”I watched. Her eerie serenity throughout unnerved even Vorian. Not that he stopped. After father abandoned us, Mother held Julia and me in both arms and whispered, “Mother’s the only one you can trust. Only I know what’s good for you.” She’s so good at lying, she believes her own. What worth does the truth have when lying gets you everything?

More excerpts!
BUILD THE BOX BEFORE YOU THINK OUTSIDE IT

Worldbuilding requires rules. Whether these rules are as quantifiable as the Brandon Sanderson school of hard magic or as opaque as the Jeff VanderMeer school of new weird, they must exist to undergird the thematic and emotional scaffolding of the story.

What fantasy and sci-fi writers have to worry about that realist literary types don’t is we don’t get to presume the reader knows the rules of our extraordinary settings from the start. More than in other literary traditions, establishment of these rules takes much more precedence in speculative fiction for the simple fact of orienting a reader to an entirely new setting (tidally-locked planet!) or perspective (raccoon detective!).

Only after establishing what is known can the author reveal not everything is what it seems. You align character with the rules of the worldbuilding, meaning you have them demonstrate and rely on their knowledge of the rules. Then you can effectively pull the rug out from under the character and thus the reader. One word I particularly like here is “misbelief.” You start with a character believing one thing and through the course of the story they either come to terms with their misbelief or cling tighter to it.THE KEY TO COSMIC HORROR IS DREAD

Another use for a character’s misbelief is dread. Sure, horror has shock, there’s disgust, but of all the fears nothing cuts deeper than dread. Dread is the essence of cosmic horror, the notion that we are less than ants in the face of an indifferent at best, malicious at worst universe, because unlike the other fears, you cannot do anything about dread. You can’t run from it, fight it, or even understand it. Dread, like inertia, creeps (shout out Massive Attack).

All this intersects with misbelief by bringing cosmic horror down from an intellectual to an emotional level. There is something slithering off-page the character cannot see, hear, or sense at all. Let’s call this eldritch abomination “the truth.” While the character toils in their efforts to maintain their misbelief, the truth keeps bubbling up, prodding them to stare into the abyssal truth. It is up to the author to decide if the character succeeds or fails.

By building that box around the character, referring to their misbelief, you can now see what lies outside of it and start bringing those two halves into conflict and perhaps resolution.FOLLOW THE BEAD ON THE STRING

Imagine a long string held horizontal and taut. Now imagine a single bead sliding across it. That bead is the heart of the story. As it travels across the string, an author’s goal scene to scene is to keep your readers following the bead like they were transfixed by the Virgin Mary. The moment their gaze wanders or they lose track of the bead, the storyteller did something wrong (taking ownership is the only useful perspective I find as an author, as we don’t control audiences but we do control how we tell stories). We’ve all experienced a book, movie, or show that had our attention and then fumbled it. The storytellers took their eye off the bead.

On the flip side, we all have fallen in love with stories that carry us along with purpose and propulsion, stories so masterful they transcend and become greater than the sum of their parts. If the emotional axis of a story, how it makes us feel, is the Y and the thematic axis, what it’s about, is the X, our favorite stories hit his chart smack dab in the middle. One of the strengths of fantasy, sci-fi, and horror is the ability to do this at scale. Speculative elements, whether they be monsters, magic or faster-than-light travel, can stand in as symbolic substitutes, demonstrate internal character’s strength or conflict externally (superhero fights are basically extended arguments with fists), or depict unheard-of civilizational disruption across a continent, a planet, a galaxy.SWEAT THE POISON OUT

Dweller in Darkness was not the original idea I had for the sequel to my debut The Mystery of the Pale King. There were a few reasons I put the original idea aside but one looms largest. The 2024 U.S. presidential election once again shook me and the country I live in to its core. The rage, the disgust, the fear, it all had to go somewhere. What writing has always done for me is allow me to sweat the poison out. There’s nothing less judgmental than a blank page.

The sequel needed to change because I had changed. This would be an angry story. There would not be peace, not for those who wrought the world of the Deadlights Duology. Peace would have to wait until after I told the story of how their world ends. Fascists abhor creativity and art because imagination is anarchic. Imagination allows our minds to go anywhere we choose, inhabit anyone’s POV (empathy, another fascist weakness), and dream better worlds. Fascists have no imagination and their jealousy frustrates them to no end.

But it’s not enough to write an angry screed. My favorite dark fantasies are laced with romanticism, however bruised, however bloodied, a flickering flame that refuses to go out in the dark. While Dweller in Darkness was an exorcism of all the darkness swirling inside me at the time, it also became a vessel for hope, because stepping into the dark made me seek out that flickering flame and hold it close until the end.
