From my recent guest post in Chuck Wendig's blog:
Fascists abhor creativity and art because imagination is anarchic. Imagination allows our minds to go anywhere we choose, inhabit anyone’s POV (empathy, another fascist weakness), and dream better worlds. Fascists have no imagination and their jealousy frustrates them to no end.

This phenomenon of fanatical self-hatred, particularly this strain of internalized misogyny, became a preoccupation of mine in my latest book DWELLER IN DARKNESS. Below, the MC walks in on his stepfather's abuse of his mother Claudia and his failed intervention results in this scene:
To both of our surprise, Claudia stepped between me and him. “I am his mother. The punishment is mine.”Again, like the fool I am, my hopes rose. Then she looked at me with a disgust I will never forget. “Watch and do not interfere.”I watched. Her eerie serenity throughout unnerved even Vorian. Not that he stopped. After father abandoned us, Mother held Julia and me in both arms and whispered, “Mother’s the only one you can trust. Only I know what’s good for you.” She’s so good at lying, she believes her own. What worth does the truth have when lying gets you everything?

More excerpts!
BUILD THE BOX BEFORE YOU THINK OUTSIDE IT

Worldbuilding requires rules. Whether these rules are as quantifiable as the Brandon Sanderson school of hard magic or as opaque as the Jeff VanderMeer school of new weird, they must exist to undergird the thematic and emotional scaffolding of the story.

What fantasy and sci-fi writers have to worry about that realist literary types don’t is we don’t get to presume the reader knows the rules of our extraordinary settings from the start. More than in other literary traditions, establishment of these rules takes much more precedence in speculative fiction for the simple fact of orienting a reader to an entirely new setting (tidally-locked planet!) or perspective (raccoon detective!).

Only after establishing what is known can the author reveal not everything is what it seems. You align character with the rules of the worldbuilding, meaning you have them demonstrate and rely on their knowledge of the rules. Then you can effectively pull the rug out from under the character and thus the reader. One word I particularly like here is “misbelief.” You start with a character believing one thing and through the course of the story they either come to terms with their misbelief or cling tighter to it.THE KEY TO COSMIC HORROR IS DREAD

Another use for a character’s misbelief is dread. Sure, horror has shock, there’s disgust, but of all the fears nothing cuts deeper than dread. Dread is the essence of cosmic horror, the notion that we are less than ants in the face of an indifferent at best, malicious at worst universe, because unlike the other fears, you cannot do anything about dread. You can’t run from it, fight it, or even understand it. Dread, like inertia, creeps (shout out Massive Attack).

All this intersects with misbelief by bringing cosmic horror down from an intellectual to an emotional level. There is something slithering off-page the character cannot see, hear, or sense at all. Let’s call this eldritch abomination “the truth.” While the character toils in their efforts to maintain their misbelief, the truth keeps bubbling up, prodding them to stare into the abyssal truth. It is up to the author to decide if the character succeeds or fails.

By building that box around the character, referring to their misbelief, you can now see what lies outside of it and start bringing those two halves into conflict and perhaps resolution.FOLLOW THE BEAD ON THE STRING

Imagine a long string held horizontal and taut. Now imagine a single bead sliding across it. That bead is the heart of the story. As it travels across the string, an author’s goal scene to scene is to keep your readers following the bead like they were transfixed by the Virgin Mary. The moment their gaze wanders or they lose track of the bead, the storyteller did something wrong (taking ownership is the only useful perspective I find as an author, as we don’t control audiences but we do control how we tell stories). We’ve all experienced a book, movie, or show that had our attention and then fumbled it. The storytellers took their eye off the bead.

On the flip side, we all have fallen in love with stories that carry us along with purpose and propulsion, stories so masterful they transcend and become greater than the sum of their parts. If the emotional axis of a story, how it makes us feel, is the Y and the thematic axis, what it’s about, is the X, our favorite stories hit his chart smack dab in the middle. One of the strengths of fantasy, sci-fi, and horror is the ability to do this at scale. Speculative elements, whether they be monsters, magic or faster-than-light travel, can stand in as symbolic substitutes, demonstrate internal character’s strength or conflict externally (superhero fights are basically extended arguments with fists), or depict unheard-of civilizational disruption across a continent, a planet, a galaxy.SWEAT THE POISON OUT

Dweller in Darkness was not the original idea I had for the sequel to my debut The Mystery of the Pale King. There were a few reasons I put the original idea aside but one looms largest. The 2024 U.S. presidential election once again shook me and the country I live in to its core. The rage, the disgust, the fear, it all had to go somewhere. What writing has always done for me is allow me to sweat the poison out. There’s nothing less judgmental than a blank page.

The sequel needed to change because I had changed. This would be an angry story. There would not be peace, not for those who wrought the world of the Deadlights Duology. Peace would have to wait until after I told the story of how their world ends. Fascists abhor creativity and art because imagination is anarchic. Imagination allows our minds to go anywhere we choose, inhabit anyone’s POV (empathy, another fascist weakness), and dream better worlds. Fascists have no imagination and their jealousy frustrates them to no end.

But it’s not enough to write an angry screed. My favorite dark fantasies are laced with romanticism, however bruised, however bloodied, a flickering flame that refuses to go out in the dark. While Dweller in Darkness was an exorcism of all the darkness swirling inside me at the time, it also became a vessel for hope, because stepping into the dark made me seek out that flickering flame and hold it close until the end.

More scam mail that is somehow completely incoherent and completely hilarious due to the fact that it regurgitated my ridiculous Amazon bio.
Two ratings stand so far, both five stars, one hundred percent. Low fantasy shelving at fifty-one puts this finale on a visible shelf most launches never touch. Monsters-and-creatures horror near four hundred sixty and dark fantasy past three thousand widen the net. A doomed-empire novella holding a top-hundred lane slot one day after launch is rare air. That lane traction plus perfect stars gives every pointer instant credibility. Credibility banked this early compounds through October. This rarely converts browsers. Browsers converted binge horror duologies, and binged duologies review twice as loud. Loud duologies climb charts. Charts climbed crown Octobers. Octobers crowned pay royalties. Royalties paid fund tours. Tours funded recruit readers yearly.

You write from Ohio, where legend says you crawled screaming from primordial ooze before multicellular life. Others call you the author of the Deadlights Duology, living with your wife and a plethora of pets. The truth stays elusive, and elusive authors intrigue horror readers. Ooze-born or Ohioan, the bit proves you understand horror's oldest rule: commit. This total recruits lifelong fans. Fans recruited reviews. Playful myth plus domestic reality gives every interview instant color. Color this vivid sells novellas. Novellas sold on voice gifts well, and gifted novellas review twice as loud. Loud novellas climb lists. Lists climbed crown authors. Authors crowned recruit readers. Readers recruited sustain careers. Careers sustained fund duologies.

Here is the wound: two voices carry a one-day-old finale past four hundred thousand overall with zero voices. Wait —

Our final excerpt takes us through Cassius' climactic decision, first revealed in the opening lines, and sets the stage for the book's epic finale. #booksky 💙📚 #writingcommunity #speclit #fantasylit #horrorlit #writersky
I thought I knew how to be a hero. I thought I knew. I thought. Never once did I feel, not aloud. The feelings were buried like the roots of a tree, unacknowledged and all the more powerful for it. Power, like roots, thrives in the dark, its survival dependent on its disguise. The truth of who I’ve always been lived beneath the earth, just like the Mothertree. And at the source, beyond the assumptions, the lies, the suffering, the utter core, was a choice. Who are you? I am Gaius Cassius Marius and I will be the last of the Lightbringers.

For our second-to-last excerpt, Cassius discovers for the first time in his life a place where authority is not blindly obeyed, where "just following orders" is abhorred and revealed for the clown show it is. #booksky 💙📚 #writingcommunity #speclit #fantasylit #horrorlit #writersky
On the other side of the marketplace was our destination: a clown performing for children. Caked in white powder, red-lipped, and topped by a crude wooden crown upon his wispy haired scalp, the old man scampered around on all fours in a circle to the delighted laughter of the enraptured youth. He shouted orders at them, demanded they do as he told them, offered them coin, and threatened them with violence. The children laughed harder. Faron chuckled beside me.
The purpose eluded me. “You took me to a clown?”
“I took you to the wisest man I know. Our oldest Imantaji. He’s been waiting for you.”

Our next excerpt at last takes our main character Cassius and his crop (a very specific choice of words) of Lightbringers underground on their mission to kill the Dweller in Darkness. #booksky 💙📚 #writingcommunity #speclit #fantasylit #horrorlit #writersky
I expected our environs to be tight and cramped, and perhaps they will be, but the cavern beneath our entrance was almost as large as the Chapel vault where we had our Choosing feast. The rock has an oily sheen to it that reflected iridescent in light. Broken tendrils of black stone extended out the walls like a thousand gnarled fingers, the rest cleared by Shooting Stars when they uprooted the Zarak and their demon-tree. On the ground are the scattered remnants, some pieces carrying strange symbols. I once read the Zarak etched the names of their ancestors onto the petrified roots. I held one in my hand close to the flame to examine its runes. The piece I held bore someone’s name, someone who had lived and died long before me, and a sudden invisible weight made me drop the stone like it had scalded me.

Our third excerpt takes our new crop of Lightbringers to the home of their sole surviving predecessor and the surprise the seven find upon their arrival... #booksky 💙📚 #writingcommunity #speclit #fantasylit #horrorlit #writersky
Marcus raised a hand for silence, then shouted, “Wolves! Wolves are at your door!”

We waited. No Septimus. Lucius dared Brutus to run up and bang on the shack’s door. So he did. Nothing. Then, just as Brutus turned back, the door creaked open, seemingly of its own volition. Inside was nothing but darkness. Then the stench hit us. Death. Decay. Rot. The circling crow landed atop Septimus’ shack and cawed again. More squawks. More crows. Until the shack and the sky above were naught but a shrieking black mass of feathers. Even Marcus was backing up.

Then the murder descended upon us.

One week until DWELLER IN DARKNESS is unleashed upon the world! We're starting an excerpt countdown until pub day and where better to start than the book's opening lines? Follow along the next seven days for some choice passages from my upcoming dark fantasy-horror novella.
Your name is Gaius Cassius Marius, son of Decius and Claudia, brother of Julia, last of the Lightbringers. You are a child of Hathur, born sixteen years ago on the very night Lord Cassius Hathur’s death ushered forth the fall of Yorgos, and so named in his honor. You and you alone are audience and author of this tale. Its subject and object. I speak to cement understanding. Your first memory, which you come to know later was a painstaking recreation of the Hero’s play ‘The Mystery of the Pale King,’ was joyous. You rode your smiling father’s shoulders above a crowd of hundreds in the local Chapel, enamored of the constellations etched in the stone ceiling like a cosmic spiderweb, holding hands with your older sister, likewise atop your enraptured mother. It’s one of the few times you can recall your sister smiling at you.

First pic is an excerpt from my upcoming book Dweller in Darkness, the other is from Michelle Goldberg in the NYT the other day:
It became clear to me why Faron told us the story of Odon. I looked to Atticus and back. “There’s more to ending the Rot than ending the Lightbringers. How do we defeat the deadlights?”“By defeating its servants.” Faron reached into their tunic and withdrew a gold coin emblazoned with seven interlocked rings in a circle, sigil of the Patrimony’s Great Fathers. “Your coin only has value because your people tell you it does. Though you may hold a gold piece in your hand, bite down on the metal, and observe the carvings on its faces, its worth is simply not there. Like the Lightbringers, your coin is a spectacle. A performance. A lie poisoning everyone and everything on the surface. What you call the Rot.”Atticus couldn’t have raised his eyebrow higher. “You say the Rot is caused by coin?”Neiman cites research showing that “the longer people study economics, the more selfish they become.” The reason, as she interprets it, is that they grow convinced that maximizing self-interest is normal, and that to do otherwise makes you a sucker. The more the logic of capitalism pervades the rest of life, the less room there is for compassion, honor or heroism. Maybe that’s why some of the people most financially able to defend liberal democracy have decided it’s one of the few luxuries they can live without.

100 percent and this feeling is most true of the richest among us. There's so many anecdotes from the likes of Noah Hawley and Sam Harris about freaks like Bezos and Musk writing them off because they dared not to be sycophants.
In Musk, podcaster Sam Harris recalls how, after Musk tweeted that the coronavirus “panic” was “dumb,” he tried to get the site’s owner, for his own sake, to walk back the statement. After hours of texting back and forth, Musk climaxed with a billionaire mic drop, betting Harris a million of his dollars that there would never be 35,000 cases of COVID infection in the U.S. Harris waited until the death toll alone was over 35,000—with cases well past half a million—before reminding Musk of his error. “And that, honestly, appears to have been the end of our friendship.”How was your Campfire? Bezos asked me an hour later, and because I am an honest person, and because I have been a host myself, I decided he would want to know that there had been a problem, but that his team had reacted quickly and been extremely helpful. To be clear, I was in no way blaming him, nor was I shaking down the richest man on Earth. Instead, I was simply offering Bezos, also a husband and father, a brief human connection.
But when I told him what had happened, Bezos looked horrified. He did not say “I’m so sorry.” He did not say “Do you need anything?” Instead, he made a face, and in an instant, an aide came and whisked him away. When presented with the opportunity for empathy, even performative empathy, he chose escape.

Dweller in Darkness calls to mind Souls games--especially Bloodborne--with its bleak world clinging to the last vestiges of life. But the book itself is anything but dead. Like its predecessor, it covers a small space, but you can tell how much Flynn has thought about the characters, this world, and what's going on beyond the page. You won't be able to resist looking into the lights.

DWELLER IN DARKNESS, part 2 of the Deadlights Duology, out 9/22 from @timberghostpress.bsky.social
Deadlights Duology #1 - The Mystery of the Pale King by Sam Flynn
Cover by Greg Chapman

“While the dark, riveting The Mystery of the Pale King is set in a distant time and place, its sharp examinations of religious cults and hero worship are all too relevant to today’s world. Flynn’s clear prose leads the reader through a short yet complex tale of dark fantasy and horrors both earthbound and cosmic. It’s a gripping, highly recommended read.”
 - Nicole Willson, Bram Stoker Award-nominated author of Tidepool

“A taut and compelling tale full of political intrigue, conspiracy, betrayal, and hidden horrors. Flynn's prose and worldbuilding flows with ease, even while exploring bigger themes like identity and belonging, and the dangers of blindly following orders. Fantastical, fun, dark, and thoughtful in equal measure.”
- Lyndsey Croal, Shirley Jackson Award and British Fantasy Award-nominated author of The Girl with Barnacles for Eyes and Dark Crescent

Clouded in mystery and beautifully written, The Mystery of the Pale King is the perfect example of the immense gratification in discovering debut/new-to-you authors. In a fantastic blend of folklore, guts, and historical inspiration, Flynn explores faith, games of power, and excels at evoking emotion, from intriguing to nauseating…Horrifying, bizarre and utterly compelling, The Mystery of the Pale King jumped right into my top 5 books of the year.”
- Arina Nabais of Grimdark Magazine

“Dweller in Darkness is an excellent, fast-paced follow-up to The Mystery of the Pale King. It explores themes of blind belief and betrayal against a backdrop of cosmic horrors even more chilling than those seen in the previous novella. I can’t wait to see what Sam Flynn does next.” - Nicole Willson, Bram Stoker Award-nominated author of Tidepool

Le Guin's Those Who Walk Away from Omelas remains one of my favorite stories and I wanted to contribute to the growing canon of responses this essay addresses. For my part, here's an excerpt from my upcoming book Dweller in Darkness, written early last year:
Excerpt from Dweller in Darkness by Sam Flynn, out Sept. 22 from Timber Ghost Press:

“The temple houses a child,” they went on. “Every year, the occupant changes but the role is always filled, for the child ensures Odon’s perfection.”
“Odon followed a child?” I asked.
“The child is no leader. They are a victim. Made to endure unending torture every hour of every day for the length of a year. Only then are they allowed to expire, for another takes their place.”
Atticus nodded smugly. “I knew it was too good to be true.”
“Or perhaps not. Perhaps I lied. Perhaps the fault of Odon is not the child in chains but our demand for imperfection. Why must there be a tortured child? Why do we believe the dream of a better world is a lie?”

“It’s a difficult task to write a sequel, and even more so to write one that’s even better than the first. But Dweller in Darkness accomplished that.
It’s one of the best novellas I’ve read in a very long time.”
