Smile it’s the weekend! A liitle blue hippo made by an Egyptian artisan around 4,000 years ago! 🦛 ❤️ Decorated with river plants and lotus flowers, blue faience hippos are associated with the life-giving Nile and rebirth. Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows an ancient Egyptian ‘roaring’ hippo statuette made of Egyptian blue faience, a ceramic material made of ground quartz. The hippo is seated with head at left, and turned to front. The hippo’s original tusks (the top incisors and lower canine teeth are known as tusks), are missing, so it looks as if the hippo is smiling. The blue body is decorated in black with stylised images of Nile river plants such as water weed and lotus flowers. This decoration depicts the hippo’s marsh habitat as well as having layers of symbolism associated with regeneration e.g. lotus flowers open with the sun in the morning and close at night symbolising rebirth. Height 7.5 cm, length 12.5 cm. On display Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen.

My photo shows a circa 2,000 year-old Roman cast glass ribbed bowl composed of translucent blue-green and opaque white mosaic glass. It has a plain rounded rim and sides which curve inwards towards the base. Below the rim, around the exterior of the bowl there are sixteen vertical, evenly-spaced ribs. The bowl sits on a textured grey surface in a museum display case which lights up the bowl so that it looks as if it contains swirling turquoise blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. In 1902 a farmer ploughed up this bronze horse at Trundholm, Denmark. Thinking it was an old toy he took it home for his children! 😱 On closer inspection he contacted the National Museum. Now the ‘Sun Chariot’ is an iconic symbol of Denmark’s Bronze Age 3,400 years ago! #FindsFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows an artefact from the early Danish Bronze Age, known as the ‘Sun Chariot’. It is shown in profile in a museum display case and is comprised of a slender stylised bronze horse standing facing right pulling a large circular gold disc. Both the horse and disc are on wheels. The horse’s long legs attach to a frame with four thin wheels, two on either side. The wheels are open circles each with four spokes. The upper part of the rear wheel is missing. A long bronze rod connects the horse’s wheel frame to that of the circular disc which is said to represent the sun. One side of the ‘Sun Disc’ is gilded, as seen in my photo. Except for an outer bronze border, most of the disc’s surface is covered with sheet gold densely ornamented with spirals. Cast from bronze, the horse pulling the gilded sun disc is said to symbolise the motion of the sun through the sky. It measures approx. 54 cm in length, 35 cm in height, and the diameter of the sun disc is 25 cm. Part of the collections of the National Museum of Denmark, Copenhagen.

Happy weekend! Ancient clay pots with octopus decoration from Bronze Age Crete some 3,500 years ago! 🐙❤️ Heraklion Archaeological Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo collage shows four pottery vessels, all creamy yellow in colour, with black painted decoration depicting lively stylised octopuses with writhing arms. All on display at Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Crete.

Top L - Minoan storage jar decorated in ‘Marine Style’ with a wide-eyed octopus, argonauts, rocks, and coral. Rounded body which tapers to a narrow circular base. Short cyclindrical neck with black wavy decoration reminiscent of waves. Loop handles attached to the shoulders. Height 55 cm. From Zakros, 1500-1450 BC

Top R - The iconic Minoan ‘Marine Style’ flask. Rounded body with short cyclindrical neck out-flared at rim, and two small curved handles attached between the top of the spout and the shoulders of the flask. An almost cartoon-like octopus, with wide eyes and sucker-lined arms. Other motifs include sea urchins, seaweed and rocks. Height 27cm. From Palaikastro, 1500-1450 BC.

Bottom L - Minoan alabastron, broad at the base, swelling outwards into a fuller belly before narrowing near the top with a very short cyclindrical neck with flat rim. Decorated in “Marine Style” with a wide-eyed octopus among rocks. From Knossos Little Palace, 1450-1370 BC.

Bottom R - ‘krater’ with rounded body narrowing at the bottom towards the foot. Wide flaring mouth and rim with black painted wavy decoration, and two sturdy handles attached on each side between the top of the mouth and shoulders of the vessel. Decorated with a front facing stylised octopus with wide eyes and tentacles which loop up and down around the body of the pot, 1370-1300 BC.

Stunning 4,600 year-old silver bracelets with inlaid semi-precious stones in the shape of butterflies! 🦋🦋🦋🦋 They belonged to Egyptian Queen Hetepheres. From her tomb at Giza. Old Kingdom, 4th Dynasty, c. 2613-2494 BC. Grand Egyptian Museum, Cairo 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a collection of sixteen ancient Egyptian silver bangles lined up side by side in two rows of eight, one above the other. They are arranged on wooden cylinders inside a wooden box covered in gold sheet. The lower row is partially covered by the side of the wooden box.

Each silver bracelet is broad and slightly curved, like a bangle. They are decorated with multi-coloured butterflies with out-stretched wings made from tiny inlaid pieces of semi-precious blue and green turquoise, deep blue lapis lazuli, and reddish-orange carnelian. Each bracelet is decorated with at least four butterflies (not all seen), with each butterfly separated by a circular piece of reddish-orange carnelian stone. Each bracelet decreases in diameter to be worn along the queen’s forearms.

When discovered in 1925, there were originally 20 bracelets in the box. An inscription on the lid of the box (not shown in my photo) says 'Mother of the King of Upper and Lower Egypt Hetepheres, box carrying rings (bangles).
