There are few things more embarrassing than having to submit to the indignity of listening to a white boomer Buddhist speak authoritatively about a tradition they don’t really understand or even really practice because they’re searching for authenticity, spirituality, or “depth.”

A nice argument I heard during a paper this morning: “Psychoanalysis is often praised for introducing the capacity for insight. I prefer the idea that it shows us that we can never be innocent.”

Teaching question: if I wanted to provide college students with a short guide (not a comprehensive introduction) that explains how to watch a film closely as well as how to take notes upon that film for the purpose of critical analysis, where might I look?

Pip, our family cat, passed away yesterday after a brief illness. She was 15 years old and a source of true joy and constant delight to all of us. As my mother’s faithful companion and as a good friend to me during especially hard times she will be as missed as she was cherished.

Working on the policy section of my syllabi for the upcoming semester. I’ve revised my policies a lot this year. I know there is an emerging tendency to want to keep this stuff to a minimum. But I still feel it is helpful to be explicit and to make an argument when I write these.

Opening preamble to the paper I will be giving at the International Forum for Psychoanalysis and Education’s conference on Subversion in Chicago, October 1-3. It’s on the book by Peter Brückner, Thomas Leithäuser, and Werner Kriesel that I have been translating and studying.

Do any folk have recommendations for textbooks designed to introduce religious studies to college students they would like to recommend? I’ve use “The Sacred Quest” (which is bad) and “Religion: The Basics” (which is good) before. But am curious to know what else is out there.

I’ve been catching up on Game Studies Study Buddies from @rangedtouch.bsky.social this weekend. I think the episodes on Sutton-Smith’s “Rhetorics of Play and the new one on Nardo’s “The Ludic Self” are all timers. Especially if, like me, you are interested in psychoanalytic conceptions of play.

I’m thinking that this year instead of having a Surrealist Summer I’m going to have a Situationist Summer. Which means re-reading works by Situationists and reading some histories and studies of the movement.

“Worries: a mental illness characteristic of the age of capitalism. Spiritual (not material) hopelessness in poverty and in vagrant, mendicant monkhood… ‘Worries’ are the index of the sense of guilt induced by a despair that is communal, not individual and material, in origin.”

Magnifica Humanitas seems to be pretty good. Glad to see that ethical and moral concerns over AI are now enshrined within the social teaching of the Catholic Church since this gives them magisterial weight and lends them authority.
