A few weeks back some friends and I started working on a "Super Metroid from Memory" project. It's coming along decently well (we're at about 10% right now, roomwise).

A room from Red Brinstar in Super Metroid with an item hidden below the floor, recreated from memory.

The pre-high jump room in Norfair from Super Metroid, recreated from memory.

It's one of those days where I resent my brain's compulsion to constantly be checking the same 6 websites I always do, rather than being productive or social or active or relaxing or anything else.

Dracula X is useful if you're a kid 20 years ago that's too dumb to download Rondo's soundtrack but somehow have the knowhow to find the .spc rip --- astoundingly passable conversion of the OST (ignoring the omissions). (that kid was me)

Due to some new IRL responsibilities and some planning mishaps, my yearly ZZT game for Oktrollberfest won't be as full-featured as I was planning on it being, but it should still have my trademark Decent Textmode Art.

Angry catgirl and plantgirl, in textmode.

This Thursday (September 24th) will mark 19 years since the pilot of the Big Bang Theory premiered. Don't forget to hold your yearly vigil mourning all the poor autistic white boys out there who have been compared to Sheldon Cooper. #ImportantReminders

Becoming the AAA equivalent to Piko Interactive isn't a decision I'd make, but who am I to tell a CEO what to do?

031

Peering into my crystal ball, I see a future where Xbox has virtually no market share, no employees, and no productive capacity besides making barebones rereleases of IP they somehow have in their rummage drawer.

130

There are outfits that basically do that (eg. Piko Interactive), but they're very much a different kind of business.

Me: "This OoT remake, while a seemingly cromulent physical product, is an affront to the very notion of videogames as art." Also me: "Hmm... if I were to rearrange the map like so, I think I would be able to fit a demake Super Metroid into Metroid 1's engine..."

It says "No Brain Drain" but they're showing a brain being drained of toxic waste. I'm getting mixed messages from this ad for Bible Pogs.

The top half of page 7 of 44 of the document linked in the quoted post.

It's an ad (?) in a Christian gaming magazine with "NO BRAIN DRAIN!" in large text up at the top. The text of the ad is telling you that Bible CAPS (pogs) and video games will help you glorify God. There is an illustration of two people in hazmat suits siphoning something from a brain into a barrel labelled "Mental Toxic Waste!" These product were available from you local Christian Bookstore or the Christian Comics Catalog.

Hall of Fame comment by one of the original programmers in the comments here:

oh wow one of the programmers added a comment since the last time i watched that video

I can think of multiple attempts back in the early 90s of publishers trying to scoop up demoscene talent (Sweeney really wanted Future Crew, Sega got Zyrinx), so I think you're right here.

110

As for the other point, I've read enough posts over the years to get a vague sense of how much the "hobbyist" SNES scene of the 90s was filled with industry professionals.

I have a core memory of describing some innocuous mascot character as "cute" to a friend, only to find out after much conversation that his only definition for the word was "sexy." Still a little bit baffling to me.
