jacobin.com/2026/05/surv... As our economy moves towards "a system where paychecks are set to the lowest a worker is willing to accept, and prices to the highest a consumer is willing to pay" @saalevine.bsky.social urges collective resistance of working people.

The Surveillance Economy Is Here. This Is How We Fight Back.
Rejecting surveillance capitalism means insisting, clearly and unapologetically, that markets should serve the people — not the other way around, writes NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protectio...

We celebrated with 500+ guests — a beautiful mix of the community of Kensington. We welcomed the great new DCWP Commissioner @saalevine.bsky.social. And of course the food was provided by the one & only Nowshin Ali of Jalsa (the food has to come from a woman-owned restaurant for a feminist Iftar).

Proud to stand with @hellodcwp.bsky.social Commissioner @saalevine.bsky.social, my elected colleagues and delivery worker leaders today in Long Island City as @mayor.nyc.gov announced a settlement with app companies for violating NYC's minimum pay law. $5+ million is going back to the workers.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani at a podium. Claire Valdez is behind him along with elected officials and Deliverista leaders.

@zohrankmamdani.bsky.social's vision is an NYC where economic growth & economic justice go hand in hand. That’s only a radical notion because we’ve become so accustomed to economic injustice as the norm. Doesn’t get better than working with @linamkhan.bsky.social & @saalevine.bsky.social again!

This week, @governor.ca.gov signed SB 766 — the Combating Auto Retail Scams (CARS) Act— into law. Sponsored by Sen. Ben Allen with support from Professor Ted Mermin, Senior Fellow Sam Levine, and others, SB 766 strengthens protections for Californians buying or leasing vehicles.

Watch former FTC official @saalevine.bsky.social testify today about how AI pricing tools are threatening basic economic fairness. Surveillance pricing "is only possible because weak privacy protections allow companies to track our behavior and predict how much we can be pushed to pay.”

Proud to support the FAIR Business Practices Act, which would prohibit unfair or abusive practices under New York law. With the federal government turning its back on consumers, this legislation is more critical than ever.

The FTC's ban on hotel and concert junk fees, now in force, "shows that smart policies–driven forward by determined leaders– can still break through even in these cynical and polarized times." Former FTC consumer protection chief @saalevine.bsky.social for The Economic Populist.👇

Last week the Trump-Vance FTC filed a brief defending Click-to-Cancel and describing industry legal attacks as “based on a fallacy.” Likely to lose in court, industry is now looking to Congress for a bailout. This effort should be cancelled immediately.

Commissioner Slaughter and I just sued to clarify that we're still FTC commissioners. But this is bigger than us. This is about economic stability. If the President can break a 90-year-old Supreme Court ruling to fire us for no reason, he can do it to the Fed, the FDIC and SEC.

Today is my last full day as Director of BCP. We’ve had in incredible run. Taking on junk fees, commercial surveillance, subscription traps, and more, we’ve advanced the most ambitious consumer protection agenda in decades. And as I detail below in a farewell post, we’ve delivered.
