Is the price you're seeing the same one your neighbor sees? Maybe not. Algorithms can now set prices based on your data, not the product, to squeeze every last dime from us. Now its time for legislators to listen to consumers and ban surveillance pricing.

Corporate lawbreaking isn't only a labor, consumer, or environmental problem. When corporations break the law, they also have an unfair advantage over companies that obey the law. Our friend, Sandeep Vaheesan at @openmarkets.bsky.social explains why the FTC must take action:

When Breaking the Law Becomes a Business Strategy, the Federal Trade Commission Should Step In — Open Markets Institute
In a groundbreaking new legal paper, Sandeep Vaheesan argues that companies that systematically violate laws to undercut rivals are engaging in an unfair method of competition and that the FTC can and should take action. This includes Big AI copyright law violations.

It has never been more clear why baristas need the backing of a union.
Today, Starbucks announced they’re closing about 250 US stores this week. A small number of these are union stores.

We expect to engage in effects bargaining for every impacted union store, as we have done elsewhere, over the conditions of these closures, including transfers so workers can be placed in another Starbucks store based on their preferences.

But let’s be clear - today’s announcement proves once again that ‘Back to Starbucks’ is nothing more than a betrayal of what workers and customers loved about the company.As Starbucks continues to close stores, violate labor law, hike up our healthcare premiums, and betray its core value of belonging to appease right-wing politicians, the company is moving farther away from everything it once was. Starbucks is becoming unrecognizable under CEO Brian Niccol — and that is why labor allies, elected officials, and customers are all joining together to boycott Starbucks until they finalize a fair union contract. Starbucks leadership is failing the company, and trouble is brewing for Starbucks. When just this month, the country’s most pro-business court of appeals called Starbucks a ‘repeat violator’ of labor law, it’s time for everyone to start paying attention.

* source: Starbucks v. NLRB, 24-60650 (5th Cir. 2026)

It has never been more clear why baristas need the backing of a union. We love our jobs, and we know Starbucks doesn’t run without us, so we’re organizing together to demand a better future and a fair contract.
