#ICYMI last week: Mayor Mamdani, Deputy Mayor Su, and Commissioner Levine announced a historic enforcement action against DoorDash for systemic violations of NYC’s Delivery Worker Laws.
NYC Wins $131.5 Million From DoorDash for Delivery Workers

One of my favorite things about being NYC’s Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice is hearing what New Yorkers want from their government and what it feels like when they feel truly seen. I had fun sitting down with @jackcocchiarella.bsky.social to talk about this and much more.

As businesses increasingly use artificial intelligence, algorithms, and other automated technologies to make decisions and deliver services, our agencies are united on a fundamental principle: New Yorkers do not lose their rights when a decision is made or facilitated by technology.

New Yorkers, here’s what you need to know about this week’s nor’easter:

The storm is expected to pass offshore, keeping the heaviest rain east of New York City. But we should still prepare for gusty winds, rain, and some high-tide flooding beginning today, peaking Friday, and potentially continuing through Sunday.

If you live near the coast, move your car to higher ground or away from streets that regularly flood.

Secure loose outdoor items, including furniture and garbage containers, that could be picked up by strong winds.
Storm tracks can change, so please stay informed and be prepared.

For emergency alerts, text NOTIFYNYC to 692-692.

DoorDash has ripped off more than 260,000 NYC delivery workers. We’re making them pay $131.5 million — the largest worker settlement in City history. This is New York, where hard work pays and greed will cost you.
DoorDash messed up.
They repeatedly left more than 260,000 NYC delivery workers underpaid or paid late, causing them immense stress and financial difficulty.
That's unacceptable.
We've secured a $131.5M settlement from
DoorDash - the largest worker settlement in NYC history and largest delivery worker settlement in
American municipal history.
Every worker will be paid what they are owed, and every company will be forced to abide by the laws of this city.

This Labor Day, we remember that a century of labor laws that protect workers’ right to organize, to a wage floor and a 40-hour workweek, to unemployment insurance, and more, happened because workers came together and had the power to say, “we deserve better.”

Black text on white page that reads:

In 1882, 10,000 workers marched up Broadway in the first-ever Labor Day parade. Led by democratic socialists and organized by New York’s unions, they rallied the movement that went on to win us weekends, safety standards, overtime pay, a minimum wage, and social security.

None of those victories were guaranteed. And none are permanent.

We created the first-in-the-nation Office of Worker Power to put the full weight of City Hall behind the people who keep New York running. On Labor Day, we honor the workers who came before us by fighting for the workers who come next.

Happy Labor Day, New York. The future of worker power is ours to build. Learn more at nyc.gov/workerpower.

New Yorkers deserve transparency, not a process that strips good union jobs from our city in the dark.
