Owl of Athena! 🦉❤️ Silver tetradrachm coin minted in Athens c. 475-465 BC. Photo Getty Museum www.getty.edu/art/collecti... #ReliefWednesday #Archaeology

On the coin’s reverse, an owl stands to the right, its head turned to the front and tilted slightly. Its wing and three tail feathers are clearly delineated in high detail. There is a two-leafed olive sprig in the top left corner and a crescent, possibly a waning moon, above the owl's wing. The inscription, located bottom right, is an abbreviation of ATHENAION, "of the Athenians." The owl is struck in high relief and framed on all four sides by the shape of the die.

Athenian "Owls” were minted in Athens for over 400 years, beginning in the 510s BC.

This coin is one of ten Athenian tetradrachms found in a hoard of coins, ingots, and jewellery discovered in 1967 on the Jordanian-Syrian border in the region of Hauran (near the ancient city of Bostra). The hoard contained coins from over twenty mints, the majority from four areas: Athens (31), Cyprus (21), southwest Asia Minor (15) and the Thrace-Macedonian area (13). The distribution and style of the Athenian coins date the hoard's burial to around 445 BC.

Friendly face

A mage holding their staff. They're wearing black clothes, their hair long and dark and their eyes glowing slightly. Even though they don't seem to be in great shape with scars covering their face, they seem peaceful, even smiling a little.

Silly birb doodle inspired by photo of a Mistle thrush. #bird #art #illustration

Comic-looking doodle of a brown-gray bird. It is looking up looking kind of scared, with it's wings flopping down. It is presented on a dark flat background, with side purple light defining it's form.

Tide stripes 🌊🌿

A striped Icthyovenator in an agile pose, mid-stride, floating. They are greenish-beige in base colour, with patches of pale cream and a red throat fading down the neck. They have stripes that are blue-ish green running from their head down to their tail.

I'd love to see everyone's paleoart that features light, shadow and reflection, please 💚🦕🦖

A digital painting of a Stegosaurus dinosaur in silhouette with a star-shaped burst of light at the top of its back plates. It's a misty morning and there is a small theropod in the foreground standing on a branch.

A digital painting of a sand dune and a light blue sky with the shadows of two dinosaurs. One is a hadrosaur and it's being chased by a theropod dinosaur.

A digital painting of a puddle with raindrops hitting the surface. In the upper left hand corner we see the feet of a dinosaur and we also see the blurry reflection of the dinosaur in the puddle.

Older designs of Sebastian and Franziska, leaning on each other and looking down in opposite directions, forlorn. They're set against a plain white wall, casting stark shadows. Sebastian has longer, collar length hair and glasses, and is wearing her red jacket over a plain light blue dress shirt. Franziska has hair cropped short and is wearing a black jacket over a white turtleneck, with her diamond brooch on a bolero tie.

Older painting, but still my favorite one I’ve ever made outdoors- I found a gator relaxing by a trail but behind a sturdy fence, so we both got to quietly spend time together while I painted this in gouache! #wildlifeart #gouache #alligator

Gouache painting on illustration board of an American Alligator. The face and front right leg are visible in frame and spotlit, and the rest of the body recedes off frame and into the darkness under plant cover.

Sigil 13 — There is no wisdom in my path; descent t'ward frozen wings beating against a still colder cage — 8" x 8" Acrylic, Collage, Charcoal, Graphite, Gold Leaf Wood Panel

An entity with a horned bovine head, wings, and three arms gestures toward a small sigil that they appear to have drawn with a quill. Above them, a golden halo is surrounded by a faint labyrinth, and music from a hymnal is collaged in the background. Below the sigil is text in Wormrōte that reads 'There is no wisdom in my path'.

Should I start putting my bird photos here as well? Let's see how it goes. Here's a Dunlin! #birding #photography

A closeup photo of a small bird called Dunlin, feeding on some algae during sunset. The bird is standing on a rocky surface. Thanks to the angle and the focal length used, I was able to blur the foreground, which happened to be some rocks reflecting the sun. Thanks to that, the photo presents a golden glow right under the birds' feet. In the lower right corner, there is a handwritten typography I added, saying "Dunlin (calidris alpina)".
