Charles wearing a brown dress, an arquebus between his legs. He’s looking at us, lasciviously slouched on a tapestry behind him. The tapestry tells the tale of Diane and Acteon.

Last Saturday was the anniversary of the death of Charles IX, sooo... Thank you Dumas for the tragic scene in Queen Margot 🩸
The king of France, Charles IX, dying in Henri of Navarre's arms. In Queen Margot, Dumas chooses to use the legend in which Charles dies poisoned by his mother and sweating blood, a rumour started by Agrippa d'Aubigné, a poet and propagandist. So there he is, pale, his eyes vacant and blood dripping from his fingers, while Henri of Navarre hugs his lifeless body and kisses his forehead. Two stars above their heads foretold this tragedy. The scene is framed by intertwined columns, Charles IX's symbols, and his K, for "Karolus". On each side, four frames tell the story of Charles and Henri's friendship. One shows Henri saving Charles during a hunt, the other Charles whispering to Henri ; the third show them hunting together and the last one depicts them holding hands.

St. Bartholomew, patron of butchers and bookbinders, and Charles IX 🩸
An emaciated Charles IX is standing in the middle of the illustration, blood dripping from his skin and fingers (the legend goes he sweat blood before he died), looking up and holding an open book from his right hand. Behind him is the figure of St Bartholomew with red eyes and a red halo behind his head.
This is both a reference to the legend saying the blood coming from Charles' skin comes from the innocents killed during the St Bartholomew massacre, which he is said to have ordered (...he did not though but one of his orders started it), and the rumors of poisoning that Dumas uses in Queen Margot (Charles ends up poisoned by a book).
St Bartholomew is also a reference to Marco d'Agrate's statue, made in 1562, year of the first war of religion in France under Charles IX.

Forgot to show you this 🎀
Maybe I’m playing with Charles IX from Queen Margot (the book. Please) and putting him in a white dress. Maybe. Margot is also applying make up to his cheeks, saying it’s easy to see it since he’s so pale. I also shaved his beard on one of the drawings because well, I could.
I actually read too many stories from the 16th century about them cross-dressing so: hell yeah we will be doing that.

Have some self indulgent art about two kings 👑
Charles IX and Henri of Navarre from the book Queen Margot. Charles' expression looks soft and amused while Henri, joyful and laughing, seems to be talking about something funny. The palette is golden, their attitude is calm, everything is at peace, at least for now.

Two kings on a hunt... Each with a different goal 🦌
Two characters from the book Queen Margot, the king of France Charles IX and the king of Navarre Henry. They’re wearing 16th century clothes in a red palette. Both characters are holding their weapon, an arquebus for Charles and a dagger for Henry. Charles smiles lovingly at him, clinging to his arm while Henry’s face is more neutral. They’re looking at each other despite avoiding each other’s eyes. These weapons were used in the book either to threaten (Charles threatened Henry with the arquebus) or to save ( Henry saved Charles’ life with his dagger). Despite everything, Charles is looking for Henry’s affection and loyalty while Henry has views on his throne. They’re definitely not hunting the same thing.

A small scene from Queen Margot (Charles IX forcing Henry, king of Navarre, to convert to catholicism to escape the St Bartholomew massacre)
This is a comic illustrating a small scene from the book Queen Margot from Dumas. King Charles IX of France retains king Henry of Navarre in his appartements and tries to force him to convert to catholicism after ordering the St Bartholomew massacre. The room is lit from the fires in the city, making the page look red.
"You have to understand me, Henriot!" Asks the king. "I understand, sire." Replies Henry.
"Well ?"
"Well, sire", I do not see why the king of Navarre should not do what so many gentlemen and poor folks have done. For if they all die, poor unfortunates, it is because the same terms have been proposed to them which your Majesty proposes to me, and they have refused, as I refuse."
Charle's expression changes into a fierce and savage one.
"What!" Yells Charles, gripping his arm. "Do you believe that I have taken the troubles to offer the mass to those whose throats we are cutting yonder?"

I don't think I've said anything here about it but I'm very passionate about checking every black legend about the St Bartholomew time period so I'm aware of Dumas' twists and it's very fun (although the story is horribly cruel) to research

Lost your paw, white rabbit ?
An illustration of my vampire oc Gigi (Virgil) again ! He’s standing and looking directly at us, an empty bottle of wine in his right (skeletal) hand and an old biker helmet in his left arm. His motorbike is right behind him, while the symbol of the three rabbits (Tinners’ rabbits) is right upon him. This visual riddle suits his rebellious, elder (immortal) non binary butt. A rabbit paw is supposed to bring luck- I suppose it’s not the case for the rabbit in question…

Charles and Acteon, from Queen Margot
An illustration of Charles and his dog Acteon from Queen Margot (Dumas). This scene is pretty awful as the king, Charles, discovers his dog (his best friend) has been poisoned and has died trying to comfort itself by cuddling an object belonging to him. He’s holding his dead dog close to him, enraged but unable to scream and realizing he’s also going to die from the same thing.

These are three characters from Queen Margot (Dumas) and their dogs.
