People forget that J6 was successful. Everyone who participated was let out of jail and the guy who perpetrated it is President again. There were no consequences. They have plenty of incentive to do a much bigger and worse version.

Great thread. The Wide Awakes were training in drill leading up to secession. Many soldiers, officers, and generals from West Point or who served in the war with Mexico fought for the Union. The CSA generalship had plenty of civilians and political appointees. Lost Cause explains a lot.

good review and also, there is still something to be written about Sarah Palin as a key figure in creating the political space that trump seized just a few years later.

Just a reminder: Tillis persuaded the woman Hegseth allegedly raped to come forward with her story, and told her that if she did, it would sink the nomination. She did. At great risk to herself. Tillis then cast the deciding vote for Hegseth. Because he’s a goddamned coward.

Outgoing Sen. Tillis regrets pivotal vote for Hegseth: ‘He’s an actor. He’s not a manager’
Outgoing Sen. Thom Tillis spoke to MS NOW about regretting his vote to confirm Pete Hegseth and his strained relationship with Trump.

Lol to be clearer, I left off anti in front of vaccines. But it's the same behavior. We don't need *insert advancement that got us here* because life is good now...but it would be even BETTER if we removed said advancement. Just so stupid.

Shocked. SHOCKED. Billionaires who aspire to live like kings would like to return to the era of dictators. Like vaccines, these ignorant fucks have the memory of a paramecium. Tax them into extinction.

The amount of money the administration is promising in order to buy votes is significantly less than the amount of money it is taking away in programs and services. And it's OUR money!

This is right. My armchair guess after following RATM for 30 years is Tom doesn't think he made a mistake in 2024 & didn't spend much time concerning himself with culpability but has shifted focus to the current midterm/American landscape fight. Which, suboptimal but within acceptable parameters.

That DOD breach is so complete that I just got a letter that after completing my enlistment 14 years ago, all the information needed to completely steal my identity, was stolen. When do I get to sue Musk and kick Big Balls in recompense for the harm they caused a combat veteran?

The Bogeyman in the animated Ghostbusters series when I was 5ish? Watched it the same day I came down with a fever and had a vivid fever nightmare that night that still sticks with me. Also watched ET too young and it freaked the hell out of me. Still can't watch it.

John Maynard Keynes, 1930, "Economic possibilities for our grandchildren"
Yet there is no country and no people, I think, who can look forward to the age of leisure and of
abundance without a dread. For we have been trained too long to strive and not to enjoy. It is a
fearful problem for the ordinary person, with no special talents, to occupy himself, especially if
he no longer has roots in the soil or in custom or in the beloved conventions of a traditional
society. To judge from the behaviour and the achievements of the wealthy classes today in any
quarter of the world, the outlook is very depressing! For these are, so to speak, our advance
guard-those who are spying out the promised land for the rest of us and pitching their camp
there. For they have most of them failed disastrously, so it seems to me-those who have an
independent income but no associations or duties or ties-to solve the problem which has been set
them.

this is exactly my opinion. there may be a superstrate of extremely difficult and unique safety problems around AI, but the substrate is simply that no one takes basic precautions seriously becasue they imagine (or pretend to imaigne) that it is futile, and basic precautions slow down launches.

I hope you're right. I think it could be that for sure in which case the external polls are likely correct. The candidate internals aren't quite so hopeful, but they could be hedging. Also a few more weeks of high prices/bad press to keep pressure on so 🤞🏼

On Bulwark Daily Pod yesterday they were talking about how internals are showing a slight reversion to mean and concern undecideds are really GOP types 3/4 will go for GOP candidate on election day. Which isn't to say Dems aren't looking great - they are but I worry the polls are overstating it.

Yep. Which is why I do think 2-3 Senate Dems have to take one for the team and privately "agree with him on everything" and take him to dinner and laugh at his jokes. Because the GOP will be guaranteeing a lucrative career outside of Congress if he defects now and his mental state is compromised.

anyway yes there's work to be done, but it's on the level of "robust Congressional oversight and immediately asserting a democratic admin civilian control to scare the hoes," not "we have to denazify the entire DoD over the course of a decade"

eh like I always say, this implies pete has been able to singlehandedly change most of DoD over to MAGA diehards with a couple speeches, dort's poasts, and turning stu loose to aimlessly wander the halls of the Pentagon in between psychotic breaks, and I just don't think that's true

Motherfucker, the rural blue collar workers here can't AFFORD to stay at home. Both parents work, they lose a huge chunk of one paycheck to daycare, but the small remainder keeps them floating from paycheck to paycheck. Get out of your fucking bubble. Honestly.

I recognize that this would probably be a quicker repost if I hadn't started off like that, but I had a visceral reaction thinking about the people in my daily life who never had a choice about not working vs daycare and the only way you arrive there is if you are the urban, educated, elite.

This. It's in tension with my belief in large, small D democracy. But I don't think I fully appreciated what "average" meant with humanity until now. By definition, half are below average. In morality. In virtue. In intelligence, etc. You need 2/3 to be a small D voter.

We need to inculcate virtue and morality (or least the public appearance of that) within our culture. Celebs, influencers, public officials, etc. would need to be showing that. I'm not sure how you do that. The 1760-1810 solution was reading Plato, Plutarch, etc. - big ask in 2026.

They don't. And then you try to think of ways to solve for that and realize that it would be far too easy to abuse if there were basic tests to take (and too reminiscent of Jim Crow) and it becomes really difficult. My one thought is...

So they need new ones to justify their costs, but the cost to get incrementally better is astronomical now. Also, while saving tens or hundreds of millions is amazing for companies, the SaaS companies tanking would more than offset those gains in the market.
