“Zionism is racism” is not a policy but a slogan. It compresses a complex history, going back millennia, and a very wide set of beliefs into one narrow meaning. The answer to genocide is not discrimination. We don't fight racism with racism. I’m gutted to see this motion adopted by the Green Party.

The principal outcome of the Green Party conference is that despite the longest and hottest summer on record, no-one is talking about climate change right now. Well done everybody.

Just witnessing that the various Green party official accounts are now posting wildly different takes on today’s conference and that, functionally, as well as morally, we now have two very different Green parties in the UK.

Rob Gandy’s collection of ghost stories has finally arrived - should be good Halloween reading - and featuring this creepy encounter in the Craigantlet Hills courtesy of my brother Adam…. which earns me a credit in the acknowledgments, alongside Richard Madeley!
Front cover: Real Ghost Encounters by Rob GandyTHE WHITE LADY OF THE CRAIGANTLET HILLS
One fine spring or summer's evening in 2004, three teenagers aged 18-19 had been having a few drinks in the Cultra Inn in Holywood, County Down in Northern Ireland. Adam and his girlfriend Rebecca were accompanied by their friend Andrew, and it was around 11 pm when they were driving Andrew back to his home in Gilnahirk, about 5 miles (12 km) away. Rebecca was driving the black Mini Cooper, and they decided to travel the country roads over the Craigantlet Hills. They were in great spirits and singing along enthusiastically to the rock band Jimmy Eat World. It was pitch black and there were no houses nearby. Suddenly, all three of them saw the same thingat the same time: an old woman in a flowing white dress standing motionless at the side of the road. She was completely still facing the road, and had long white hair and a pale gaunt face, with her mouth agape. What was most disturbing was the fact that she was glowing, All three teenagers were speechless with shock and, as Rebecca instinctively slowed the car down to a crawl, they looked closely ar the woman as they went past her. It was then that Rebecca put her foot down on the accelerator and all three started screaming and shouting in their panic. Adam pleaded with Rebecca to turn back, but close to tears, she continued driving along the road.
Adam recalls that the spectral old woman was not picked up by the car's headlights and everything was black except for her. All three friends saw the woman and the ‘unchecked reaction was total hysteria.’ In response to a question about what the woman's eyes were like, Adam says that it was mostly the woman's outline and gaping mouth that came to mind. When he got home, he discussed the event with his family, and they explored potential explanations.
Was the woman a banshee - a harbinger of death famous in Irish folkore for its chilling screams? There had been no sound like a wail or a scream; the face was too relaxed. And, fortunately, no one close to any of the teenagers died soon afterwards. Was it a case of pareidolia, where people perceive faces or other recognizable images in random or ambiguous settings or objects (such as the face of Jesus on a slice of burned toast) and the teenagers were mistaking, say, a tree for the woman? Adam says that she was right at the side of the road, a decent distance from the bushes and ditches. He adds that it definitely wasn't a case of an elderly woman with dementia having gone wandering during the night; it would have been too cold for someone only wearing a nightdress and, as stated above, there were
time was 'very unnerving'.Acknowledgements page featuring myself, some fellow Forteans and… Richard Madeley!

for me I think I have a level of moral objection, not absolute, but also a lived experience of AI misleading me and wasting my time, and therefore my anti-AI stance feels like a kind of reasoned response to that?

my only ongoing exposure to AI is in search engine summaries and it continues to give misleading and factually incorrect summaries of academic papers and other articles, direct me to references that contradict it or don’t exist etc… so what exactly am I missing out on?

I don’t get this when my wife is driving her ID3 because we have the regenerative breaking turned off (without losing any range either). But we both got extremely nauseous in a short test drive in another EV where we didn’t know how to deactivate it, and I understand in some cars you can’t.

I don’t really follow the strange tendency among some fellow Remainers that we can never rejoin because we deserve to be punished and the EU must force us all to wear sackcloth - there’s loads of it on here. No-one has ever left and rejoined before, it will be a negotiation, let’s see.
