Now the weather's definitely cooling at night a strange thing's happening in my house. The wooden floorboards are cracking quite loudly at this time of night as they contract I guess. First time it happened I thought my floor was about to collapse into the cellar, quick check and no it wasn't. Phew.

The government has been criticised over the prison early release scheme, which is unfair, considering that the problem has been festering since the Tories were in power for 14 years. Most of those being released were serving short sentences, an issue that's contributed to the overcrowding problem.

The timeless beauty of ancient glass! This Roman glass scent bottle is around 2,000 years old, yet its elegant design feels surprisingly modern! British Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a small Roman scent bottle made of cobalt-blue mould-blown glass in the form of a scallop shell. At the top it has a cylindrical neck with an out-turned rim. There is a thin, curved, handle either side of the neck. The top of each handle is attached to the neck, and the bottom is attached to the top of the scallop shell. Bottle dimensions: height 8.5 cm, diameter 5.2 cm. Dated AD 25-100. It is displayed on a circular, clear perspex (?) stand in a British Museum display case. The bottle was bequeathed to the British Museum by Felix Slade in 1869.

Dinner was ok, but disappointingly 'light'. Chicken palungo, but mostly spinach. I messed up the couscous, it came out a sloppy claggy mess. I searched for something substantial and sweet and resisted temptation to cut into Christmas Cake as it's too early and hasn't macerated in brandy long enough.

"London used to be the best city in the world. I loved living and working there. Genuinely loved it. The whole world wanted to be in London. Now? It is a dump.

Outside a few select posh areas right in the middle of the city, it increasingly resembles the third world."

It's not ok to not only insist everyone chants the same phrase but then to vilify, attack, demean, target, boycott and otherwise turn the hatred onto someone/anyone who refuses to chant the same phrase. This is what dictators do. They don't allow anyone to have a slightly different opinion. Ever.

Since PTSD is being invoked to excuse any and all abuse and misconduct, let us acknowledge where it is most common. .... From my book Recollections of My Nonexistence.
The former Marine David J. Morris, author of a book on post-
traumatic stress disorder, notes that the disorder is far more com-
mon and far more rarely addressed among rape survivors than
combat veterans. He wrote me, “The science on the subject is pretty
clear: according to the New England Journal of Medicine, rape is about
four times more likely to result in diagnosable PTSD than combat.
Think about that for a moment— being raped is four times more psy-
chologically disturbing than going off to a war and being shot at and
blown up. And because there are currently no enduring cultural nar-
ratives that allow women to look upon their survival as somehow he-
roic or honorable, the potential for enduring damage is even greater.”

NASA's MESSENGER Satellite Captures Spectacular Color Mosaic of Mercury - From Goddard Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/9uD599
NASA image acquired: January 14, 2008

This spectacular color mosaic shows the eastern limb of Mercury as seen by MESSENGER as the spacecraft departed the planet following the mission's first Mercury flyby in January 2008. The colors of this image are not those that would be seen by the human eye but instead convey information about the distribution of different rock types on Mercury's surface. The different rock types result in subtle color variations across all of the 11 WAC narrow-band color filters. The Caloris basin, visible as a large bright yellow circular area in this image due to its infill of volcanic plains, dominates the northern region. A similar image was published in Science magazine in July 2008, but it only covered the northern half of the region shown here. To create this larger color mosaic, MESSENGER Science Team members had to also devise a method to deal with scattered light in the 11 different WAC filters. MESSENGER has obtained color imaging at this resolution only for the portions of Mercury seen on departure from Mercury flybys 1 and 2.

As spectacular as this color image is, it is just a taste of what is yet to come. In 2011, MESSENGER will become the first spacecraft ever to orbit Mercury and begin a year-long observing campaign that includes imaging all of Mercury's surface in color at an average resolution of about 1 kilometer/pixel (0.6 miles/pixel), a resolution that is about a factor of three better than this already impressive image.
