I left X *because* I had a large following. People told me I was the reason they were staying on there, and I didn’t want to be responsible for 100k+ people sticking around for abuse, CSAM, and Nazis. Simple as that

I am reluctant to espouse the position unequivocally because it's so cynical, but we really do need an analysis of whether the correct strategy for Dem electeds during Republican presidencies is "sandbag the country because you won't get credit for helping it"

Really seems like journalists don't treat the problem of accurately reporting on the mental states of potentially deceptive actors as seriously as they need to.

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

Like, it's not clear to me that these two different ways of arriving at "Good morning, Stephen" clearly indicate which actor(s) are conscious.
100
Russ Silva @russellsilva.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
And even if Stephen texted me "good morning", and I manually performed some calculations predicting the most likely response based on his text, and replied "good morning, Stephen" based on those calculations, I think I would still be conscious while doing so.
100
Russ Silva @russellsilva.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
I mean if your example of a conscious process is a) recognizing Stephen plus b) noticing that it's morning then c) saying "Good morning, Stephen" then there's computer programs that can do that. That capability even predates LLM technology.

Anyway, no one is required to base their beliefs on a sci-fi television show. But these episodes provide serious challenges to the idea that TNG was never commenting positively on the idea of AI having rights.

Like in "Evolution", dismissiveness of the idea that the robots could be alive or worthy of moral consideration is portrayed as narrow-minded. Data, who advocates for the robots, is portrayed as heroic.

Russ Silva @russellsilva.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
The ending of "Quality of Life" is somewhat more ambiguous. But the episode addresses the philosophical question of what qualifies something as "alive" directly. The show's answer: humanity has never definitively answered the question. www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OfI...

Even if Data's stories are hand waved away as metaphors, and not as commentaries on artificial intelligence, TNG has multiple episodes that address the moral status of artificial intelligence. They take the idea quite seriously, with dismissiveness portrayed as bigoted and/or villainous.

I mean in more recent memory we had the video game and violence-on-tv moral panics. History has no shortage of claims that new media developments are ruining the youth. It would be no surprise if the AI version of that idea turned out similarly.

Not sure there's much value to drawing attention to the execution of Nidal Hasan. The death penalty for murderers polls well and Hasan is not a sympathetic figure. www.pewresearch.org/politics/202...

Most Americans Favor the Death Penalty for Those Convicted of Murder
While 68% see the death penalty as morally justified for those committing murder, 59% say it doesn't deter serious crimes – and there are wide partisan gaps on both questions.

I know everyone’s jaded and exhausted by the continual parade of madness, but this is the president of US openly inciting racist violence against an entire community of immigrants. (w/ alt text)
The once Great State of Minnesota is being taken over by Somali Immigrants. There is Violence, Murder, and Mayhem all over the State. The people of Minnesota must fight back. You have been robbed, and abandoned by your State Government. Your Governor is an incompetent thief who doesn't want to get involved. He just wants to get out of town with as much as he can steal, and then, lead a quiet life. The Somalians should not be allowed to get away with what they are doing.
They view you as weak and stupid people. Fight back Minnesota, fight back! If you need, the Federal Government will come to your rescue.
Governor Tim Walz, and Mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, must immediately ask for Federal help — and leave the rest to us! President DONALD J. TRUMP

How is that not an abridgement of the right to assembly? Person A proposes an illegal action at a public protest, Person B says "no, let's not do that", A commits the crime anyway, B attends the protest but doesn't participate in the crime. Really seems like B should not be culpable.

The United States has made its choice.
We choose the unapologetic pursuit of national power.
"Nationalism" became a dirty word,
, so we
tore down our monuments, condemned our own history, and taught children to be ashamed of the countries they would inherit.
