When a politician in power says, “I’ll fight the next General Election on this issue”, what they really mean is, “I’m delaying doing anything about it.” Andy’s right: We need NHS style social care, paid for by national taxation. But we need it now, not in 3 years, if they win the next election.

They were not really introduced then, they replaced existing programs of schools independent of local authority control and overall more schools were brought back into authority control then removed after the end of the Labour government. Where’s the evidence that this was because of academies.

The delay is quite right, but the review needs to set average new council size at 200-350k and be based on existing District/Borough councils. Where boundaries need tweaking to make sense (Falmer must be in Brighton) it should but no large area should be forced without consent. bbc.in/4xILLTQ

In France there are 120 meteorological stations that monitor temperatures. Whenever one of these stations records a temperature above 40 Celsius an alarm is triggered. Between 1959 and 2000, 30 alarms were triggered. In 2026 alone, 114 alarms have already been triggered.

Political uniforms on marches are illegal in this country. Protesters have been arrested at pro-Palestinian marches for wearing masks. Yet masked far right groups are allowed to intimidate our communities. It is two tier policing that arrests grandmas protesting Gaza, but allow this?

We will not stand by as this happens. The Spectator targeted Professor Jason Arday. Now they are repeating the same playbook with another Black academic leader. We are hearing from so many Black UCU members who work in fear. Fear that they will be next. We cannot and will not tolerate this.

Genuinely pleased for 24/7 free disabled bus travel announced by @andyburnham.bsky.social I wrote @heidialexander.bsky.social asking for: 1) bus passes given to all blue badge holders 2) free passes for under 16 3) national bus passes for under £500 pa for others - slashing bus commuting by half.

I’m delighted, after years of cross party campaigning, the Gov has published a Conversion Therapy Bill and will move to make this abuse illegal. After I drafted a Backbench Bill on this and worked alongside campaigners, it’s wonderful to see this long overdue step being taken.

Honestly, you'd be amazed how hard it is to source a wide ranging basket of goods data for the north east of england. Like, this is one of the most economically distressed parts of the UK, with falling healthy life expectancy and historically way behind the rest of the UK. >>>
