Now that I think about it I did read The Forever War. I'm still not sure what the author's politics are because the book focuses on the story. The story as I understood it, is about returning home to find home has changed.

I didn't mean it that way (but I kind of did). My annoyance with stories about space battles is frequently the author has inserted extreme right wing politics. Starship Troopers, Hammer's Slammers, and now you say Honor Harrington too. I'm looking for sci-fi that isn't like that but its impossible.

This is one of my peeves when fanart is made and it's so out of character a socially awkward character becomes a horny kinkster because the writer can't imagine how they would approach sex or a strong warrior is in bondage because the artist can't imagine sex with a woman he can't dominate.

This doesn't just hurt the US, this would have been only the third spacecraft to go out into the outer heliosphere after Voyager 1 and 2, and they were built using 1970s technology, and running out of power in about a year. What would have been discovered is a loss for all human science.

Yeah I know. In the 6mo since I posted that I've gotten over that insecurity that was what every paleontologist ever said clashing with the existence of AI. Also I've learned more about the tech industry (look into "Rationalists" and "Zizians" if you don't know be prepared for a trip.)

I just learned about this stuff too but I'm coming at it from a different angle. I knew about LessWrong, of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality but had no frigging idea it was connected to AI or what people were on about when they griped about "rationalists" in the same tone as "assholes"

i get why AI is so depressing to me. because covid already shrunk my world to almost nothing, where almost all of my life revolves around socializing and watching videos on the internet (which is being ruined by AI) and creating creative works through coding (which is being ruined by AI), often using open source tools and libraries (which are being ruined by AI)

i already had so little and now even that is being rotted away before my eyes

But I got something out of the experience by working really closely with the pixels it was drawn as-if certain digital brushes exist, which I wrote down the end effects of (variable line width, variable color blending) and searched for them and found they are standard in Krita.

I got lucky to have my artistic breakthrough before AI was invented. I spent years telling myself I couldn't do art because I was bad at art instead of training and if I had a tool to magically draw anything I want I would've reached for it, so I get it, but yeah no.

If you're like me and on iOS, and got locked out of 18+ servers, but you're classified as an adult, go into the discord web app and recheck the age restricted servers on iOS. I have a religious exemption from using all generative “A.I.” I am not a member of the Silicon Valley sect. Their beliefs and practices are an affront to my sensibilities. The tech is trained on stolen intellectual property. The output is riddled with mistakes, and it is incapable of comprehending the weight of its errors. It is not even an “it.” But sometimes, it is filtered and massaged by unaccountable human sweatshop workers and bad actors. I am not required to use “A.I.” any more than I am required to join Amway, buy black market rhino horn, or attend the Fyre Festival. As a human, I have a duty and right to limit my carbon and water footprint and protect my fellow human. As a union worker, I have a duty and right to oppose tech that is used to threaten workers or cheapen our product. As a tech consumer, I have a duty and right to oppose scams that lower the quality of our tools. As a scholar, I have a duty and right to oppose anti-intellectualism. As a taxpayer, I have a duty and right to oppose the misallocation of public funds and data. As a grown up, I have a duty and right to protect young people from predators. As a person with a conscience, I am appalled at the decadent disregard for user safety, the callous dismissal of responsibility for lives ruined and slaughtered. My religion is related to my identity, geography, and family, making it an irrelevant accident of birth. What matters is that I was born. I have an exemption from their digital rapture, their cultural austerity, their intellectual poverty. I practice wholesome hedonism and First Do No Harm.
